Hunter 25 Lake Lanier
I’m the brand new owner of a 25 foot 1983 Hunter Sailboat. Hi!
A couple quick questions:
Referencing the forum subtopics. What size boat do I have? large medium small?
The boat sat docked for two years and is in need of a deep deep deep cleaning. I have an idea of how to go about it but I want to bounce it off people first.
Lastly, I don’t see a manual related to my model year was wondering how interchangeable the manuals are.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum FB! You have what the forums have called a smaller boat: Smaller Boats Hunter 18' to 26'
It's all a matter of perspective. My 30 is rated as a medium boat even though 32 is as big as they get on our reservoir.
Is yours a 25.5? My boatyard neighbor is selling one. If it has been docked that long, it will need to be hauled out and the bottom cleaned and inspected carefully.

Cleaning..... a pressure washer, shop-vac, a case of paper towels, mold & mildew killing spray, lots of windex or other general cleaners, a young child who can squeeze into those places you can't and who thinks cleaning a boat is fun and about 8 hours of time to get it done.

Thanks. What does ‘hauled out’ mean? Pulled from water?
Also the sail has a C 25 on it which I’m told tells that it’s a 25 footer. I’m sure there’s lots of discoveries to be made.

Yes, Hauled out means pulled from the water.

It is a term more usually reserved for non-trailerable sailboats but it means the same thing for either.

It's a 25. '83 was the last year for them. The 25.5 picked up in '84.
Yes, by hauled out I mean taken out of the water onto stands or trailer. You'll want to do this eventually to clean off the 2 years of growth and inspect for blisters. The keel is probably cast iron like mine so you may want to see if the rust needs attention.

Mainsail must have been transplanted from a Catalina 25..
That 25 has the same hull as the "blisterdeck" 25 from '74, but has a deckhouse that has much more headroom.. A fine sailing boat..

I’m really looking forward to getting this thing up and running. What does the term “blisterdeck” mean?

And now a word from the sponsor...
Cabinet catch for many Hunters

These catches were common on Hunters from the Legend-era through today's Marlow-Hunters. We keep a large stock on hand for emergency shipments or just getting spares.

Cleaning..... a pressure washer
Welcome to this forum, FP.
Be careful if you use a pressure washer on the deck. It will push water into places you never would imagine. However, you will find out where she leaks.
BTW, that boat is a Cherubini designed Hunter. I have the '77 30 footer. Great sailing boats. Lots of info on these boats here. John Cherubini II, the son of John Cherubini, the original designer, has restored a Hunter 25. Check out the archives.

I would not use a pressure washer at all. Get some new scrubbing brushes and long handle and start with normal soap and water from a hose. Pressure washing is just asking to cause leaks and issues in my opinion. I use Starbrite Nonskid Deck cleaner on my entire boat and a cheap bleach cleaner on suborn stains. A plastic bristle hand brush will clean the teak wood up nicely with a bit of water and the nonskid cleaner too.

Also I think those C25 sails are going to be 1 foot too short, so even less sail area, I'd look at getting proper sails made this winter.

I love Starbrite Nonskid Deck cleaner. Then I apply Woody Non skid deck wax. Most of my deck is non-skid.
No pressure washing here!

Your forum is the Cherubini Hunters. Lots of posts there on your boat. The designer’s son, JC II has been refitting his H25, and the archives have lots of good discussions with him and others.

The “bubble top” h25 was a racing version of the deck with the front end of the cabin rounded and faired into the deck. You have the more boxy cruising version. I think it has more headroom, and was by far the more popular model.

Welcome, and good luck with your clean up effort. When you finish it, consider having the boat surveyed to find out what else needs attention, and to develop a longer term maintenance plan. You may also need a survey to get the boat insured.

Sometimes:

loading dasbOOt onto a trailer in 3 foot waves alone - dasbOOt seem wildly very big

5 Sisters and a brother take a tour and stay too long - dasbOOt seem a tad small

pulling down steep narrow gravel alley in strange town - dasbOOt seem very big indeed

sailing into strange big city marina - dasbOOt seem embarrassingly little

waking up at rainy 3 am with anchor drag - dasbOOt seem a little big

arising on day 3 of 12 with pissed off admiral - dasbOOt seem very very very small....
