Aftermarket Stern Rail Seat Mods

I purchased a set of stern rail seats from the CaltalinaOwners site and made a simple modification that you may all like. The seat post that attaches to the bottom of the stern rail seat are designed to rest on top of aft lazarette (vertical position) making it a pain to open and also interferring with aft seat cushion. West marine sells angled mounting backets for standard SS or alum tubing the same size that come with the seats. I bought four of those angled post mounts, cut the alum tube from the stern rail seats and mounted one on each seat using same drill holes as original and one on top of each coaming. The sizing of the alum pole takes a few cuts to make it just right. A note - You cannot install seat pole with both mounting brackets attached to boat since the geometry is off but that is no problem since you can put the loose bracket on the seat pole and slide it into position to align with predrilled holes in coaming. The stern rail posts now are fixed to the boat and do not interfer with opening the aft lazarette. This was so easy. Wing N' Prayer Long Beach, CA '85 C36 #456

Me, too!

I used West Marine angled fittings (60degree)and moved the post to the outside of the coming. On a 26.5 the angle is as close as OEM and the installation looks "factory."

Stern Rail Seat Modification Pictures

Pictures of a similar modification that first gave me the idea are shown in the Photo/Project section of this forum. Althought they used a different method to attach to the coaming - the idea came from this post - Credit due and Thank you.

Thanks for the credit

Mark, I'm glad you picked up on my post and made it even better. Do you have pictures of your installation? It would be great to see exactly what you did. Getting rid of that vertical post sure makes the seats much more useable.
