I wonder if anyone has any experience with aftermarket replacement alternators from API or MES? I am looking to replace the 60amp alternator on my 3JH4E Yanmar with the 80amp (LR 180-03C) option. The cost of the aftermarket alternators is 1/2 that of the Hitachi used by Yanmar.
While I know it would be better to use a Balmar with an external regulator, I don't want to have to adjust the digital tach when changing the alternator (my engine tach is driven by alternator pulses).
Despite the internal regulator, I have found that the yanmar 60 amp performs very well....but I do want to carry a spare alternator...my old 60amp and the modest improvement to 80amps can't hurt charging my 4 golf cart house batteries. I called API and the tech there assured me that their alternators are same spec as OEM Yanmar.
Any feedback from users of these aftermarket alternators would be appreciated.
