When we uncovered the boat (Catalina 34) this spring we discovered that we'd been hit by lightning at some point over the winter. Very unusual, as the boat sits on a metal cradle but the cradle is up on wooden blocks. The marina had parked it within 18" of the clubhouse building and apparently, the lightning hit the mast, came down the backstay and arched from the rub rail to the aluminum gutter on the building. Blew up a bunch of electrical stuff in the club house as well.
We have 3 spots where the rub rail is melted through and a big hole in our custom winter cover. Wind, depth, and speed are all toast. Got lucky with the new VHF and stereo, those seem to have escaped unharmed. I won't know about the engine until I get a hose hooked up to try and run it. Likely good except maybe the alternator. Could have been much worse if the fire had taken hold
So, what to look for beyond the obvious. We're having the mast taken down next week to inspect, and replace the wind vanes and antenna. What should I look for/be concerned about as far as the rig goes?
Opinions: Is the marina at fault for placing the boat so close to a building? Without that ground path, this wouldn't have happened.
