I am looking to purchase a 1999 340 but there are only two winchs on the cabin top. I was wondering if anyone has installed aft winchs like there are on the new models? I notices there is a place for them but I have not seen any 340 with them. Does anyone have an idea on the cost etc. Thanks Any other comments about the 340 that would help the purchase decision would be great.

Joe, I can only speak for our H28 and P42...

Both had genoa/jib winches about half way back and outboard of the cockpit. In addition we had one winch on the coach roof by the companion way on our H28 and one on each side of our P42 that we use for main sheet, topping lift, vang, etc. Have you asked the current owner how they rigged and trimmed the genoa sheets for sailing? A good quality two speed self tailing winch can run from $300 and up depending on size. Most all Hunters that I've seen have them. Terry

Aft Winch

I have not asked the old owner yet but will I see how he rigged it with just the two winches but seems you need two people or to put auto on to trim etc. I was hoping to put two new aft winches on so I could single hand from the wheel. Maybe I will get another reply that has done this. Thanks. I am still thinking about the 340 I have not purchased yet.

Cabin top winches....

...are generally used for any lines coming off the mast ie: halyards, cunningham, pole topping lift etc. Genoa winches are located on either side of the cockpit and are used for genoa/jib sheets, spinnaker sheets and guys. Which ones are you missing?

The 340 I am looking at only has the two on the top cabin there are not any aft winches but there are rounded flat spots for them I am thinking putting winches there would make things a lot easier not sure how much if any has done it etc. Thanks for the reply

Lemar 30's

On my 1997 Hunter 340 I have a Lewmar 40 and a 30 (self-tailing)on my cabin top, which combined with rope clutches satisfactorily handles all the haylards and sheets for both the main and jib. For my asymmetric spinnaker sheets, I have two Lewmar 30'mounted behing the arch. Working with this set up are two snatch blocks, which are attached/removed from under the transom seats.

On my recently acquired 2000 H 340 the jib sheets are run to roller/blocks on the cabin top, through rope clutches and then to cabin top winches. I would also like to add winches on the cockpit coamings but wonder how you would run the sheets?

If you look at the 340 for sale on the Hunter web site for 340 you can see a picture of one rigged like that. Its the boat for sale from NJ. I think you just bring the sheets back and on to the winch. I sent a message to the owner for feedback on cost and rigging I will forward his reply to you.

Works fine for me

My 336, the "early 340", only has the two cabin-top winches. Singlehanding is complicated with needing to move forward of the wheel, but with a bit of practice you can comfortably bring her about with one set of hands. You do need to be sure how you are going to rig the headsail sheets before you start spending your money for winches. I looked at that possibility and decided to spend my money on other things. That location for winches is designed for spinnaker sheets, not headsail sheets. Fair winds, Rodney S/V Avanti H336
