Aft Traveler Location on a Spirit 23

Hi Don;
I'm fairly new to sailing but I'm anxious to learn! I want to build a boom traveler on the AFT pulpit. I figure I can make it about 5 Ft long (across the transom). The boom is currently attached by 2 cables mounted on the transom on either side of the tiller. I have not seen a setup like this (but I'm sure I haven't seen them all!) Would the angle of the attach points from the car on the traveler to the boom be too excessive to work?

The Catalina 22 has a short aft traveller - the key to keeping friction low is to align the traveller car to the load - by rotating it forward - thus avoiding side loads on the traveller car perpendicular to the travel direction.

OC has a good idea, copy one from a C-22. There has to be one near you. As I remember mine the traveler is a stainless rod. The "car" is a stainless bracket that is kind of like a wide(4"?) hose clamp. I kept mine centered since I had no controls for it. But maybe OC has a real traveler bar and car. I think that you are right about the older boats - they have just that funky bar setup. Newer C22s like mine have a real traveller bar and car on rollers with control lines and 2:1 purchase. The traveller bar is mounted to the round stainless bar above the tiller, but tilted forward to avoid loading across the bar.

It would be easier to use with 4:1 control lines - another project for another day. It would be nicer if it were a Harken ball bearing car as well...
