Hey guys! I have a '95 H26, does anybody else have any problems with bilge water or condensation getting into the aft matresses? We let them air out put them in place....sleep great...come back a week or two later and the matresses are heavy with water. Yes, there is water in the bilge when we get there but not an excessive amount.....If anybody else has this problem, how have you fixed it? We now just pull our matresses out and leave in the cabin instead of leaving them lying flat in the aft berth. We have dry bunk from West Marine it seems to help a little. Any other ideas?

Wet Berth Fix

It could be one of three things. They have all happened to me. The first to check is when you fill or empth the ballast tank watch for splashing that comes out through the vent hole. I used to leave the vent plug in until the tank was half full or empty. The second is to check the hatch over the aft berth. Wipe the gasket down to make sure no dirt is on it. It doesn't take much to create a leak path. If need be tighten the latches. Last check the recess your cockpit table leg sets in. They are usually full of water and after a few years of use the fiber glass inside will develop a hole. I removed the cover plate in the ceiling of the aft berth and reglassed this area. It also helps to put a plug in the table leg hole. Try using a trailer hitch (recv. type) plug. These steps took care of my wet berth. Good Luck. Jeff

There should be NO water in the bilge!

Jeff covered the bases reguarding non bilge water, I would add that water from leaks behind the cabin liner could wind up anywhere and the companion-way hatch can allow rain or washing water in. Dry the bilge completely, if It gets wet after sailing then that's another problem with many possible causes. Check the archives and/or post here again. alan

Probably not the bilge

If the mattress is actually heavy with water, then I doubt it is condensation from the bilge. More likely it is water coming from above. Like Jeff, I used to have water dripping down from above, originating from the cockpit table recess. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

On my 1999 H260

I had the same problem and the cause was due to loose caulk where the stern running light wiring passed through the deck. On the H260, that area is low and exposed enough that wakes from astern could put enough water into form a puddle in the back compartment (aft of the berth) and when healing to starboard the water would run up and onto the berth area. Was intermitent and very perplexing due to would start dry before a sail and be soaked at the end. Found the trouble area by placing dry towels around to detech the ingress of water to the area, and pin pointed it by hosing down suspected areas with a garden hose while monitoring from within. 5 minutes of prep and a little caulk solved the problem and I have dusty dry bilges and berths again. If you are getting water in while the boat is at rest, you probably need to look at how rain is getting in from above through fittings, hatches, etc. Fair winds, Tom
