What does it generally mean when there is oil coming out of the exhaust into the water lift muffler? I know it must be bad just not sure where to start. I am getting about 1/3 of a quart of oil coming from my exhaust manifold into the Water Lift Muffler box everytime I run the engine for an hour. It is a Universal M-25 that runs great except for the Oil use.

Denny, Does this mean that you must add

oil to the crankcase on a regular basis? If so, my first guess is a failed head gasket.

does it stop there?

Curious how you can observe oil in the muffler? is it coming out the exhaust discharge sufficient to see oil behind the boat or is it somehow only limited to the muffler which is a different problem?

Hawaii... I guess it's not a winterization/freeze issue? I don't think the M25 has an oil cooler where the raw water and oil go through a heat exchanger (possible location of a crack). How noisy does it run? Any tapping? It could be oil blowing by the valves, but that sounds like quite a bit of oil. I'm not a mechanic; maybe one will chip in on this. Is there a lot of oil on the outside of the engine too? Did you just notice this situation on an engine that was previously working fine?

Oil or fuel?

Is it lube oil or unburned diesel fuel? Unburned fuel will look black and oily on the water.

thanks for your response

I first noticed it leaking from the riser. When I changed the riser there was lube oil inside the pipe.

In the muffler ??

I too am curious as to how you can see the oil in the waterlift muffler. You stated it is coming out the exhause into the water lift muffler. If you get 1/3 of a quart each time you run the engine, where is it going from there. If you get 1/3 of a quart into the muffler each time you run it, the muffler would soon be full if it doesn't discharge through the exhaust. Oil blowing out of the engine could be caused by many things, but I would tend to agree with Ross, and the first place I would look would be the head gasket. It has to be coming from someplace where it doesn't get into the combustion chamber or it would just burn and smoke. Depending on the engine design it could also be nothing more than a manifold bolt that goes into an oil passage and is a little loose.
