Currently we are part of the Brewer network and our Marina fee's are high. We pay $3500 for the slip and about $1500 for winter storage. This is a per year estimate. What we are looking for is a Marina or Yacht club that will be more affordable than what we are paying today. Our boat is 30 feet and draws no more than 4 feet. Currently we are looking from Gilford, CT all the way to Niantic, CT. Our season is from April 15th until October 31st. Most of the time we are fair weather sailors. Looking for friendly and children friendly people. We do not need a pool and other land based "stuff". Waiting list is not an issue if we can place our name on the list and get a slip some day? Any help would be great.

I pay 81.00 per foot in New London, CT. Sheltered cove, pool and thats about it. Not bad on labor rates and have a full service shop.

Eric, I am a renter at Ferry Slip Dockominiums in New London, which isn't very far from Niantic. I am currently paying $1400.00 for the season for a 28 footer drawing 4 1/2 feet, but depth isn't an issue here. Winter storage was $28/foot. Slips have power, water, telephone and cable if you want it and a nice club house with heads, showers and laundry facilities. The dock master is top notch. No fuel, but there are fuel docks nearby and we also have ice. Not hard to get to once you've been there once. People are friendly and there are some slips available, although I don't know what the owners are asking. I won't depress you with what I pay down here and how long our season is. Seems it would pay better to keep the boat further south and fly to it on weekends.

...in the northeast; at least that's what it seems. I am at Brewer's in Warwick, RI and while there are less expensive marinas to keep your boat, cleanliness and modern facilities are important and come with a price tag. I looked at all the marinas in my area and there are some real dumps. But guess what...even all of the DUMPS have waiting lists! You get what you pay for. Cheers, Bob

About once a year I reply re this subject, so here it goes for this year. Yacht clubs are the best kept secret, well maybe the secret is out. I keep my 37 Hunter in a YC in the NJ raritan bay area and total costs for the club run under 2k and that includes 11 dinners for 2 people. Winter costs are seperate and I pay a marina the going rate. There is an initiation fee. For a number of years our club had space but as I said the secret is out and now we have a wait list of about 8% above our capacity. I have been told that there are YC in Brooklyn that have mooring space available, close to places with $1m condos - I don't understand this. I would investigate the YC's in your area and place yourself on the waiting list immediatly. R. Young Hunter 37

Like Young's post, I'd second Yacht Clubs as being a potential money saver. Our club (Poulsbo Yacht Club) has around 500 members and around 100 slips. The slips are legal "apartments" under state law, and the marina is called a "condominium". You buy your slip which has a legal plat so you own it; however, it is required that you be a member of the yacht club. There is an initiation fee and there are annual dues for the club which are relatively nominal. There is also 12 hours of "work-or-pay" which is doing something to help the club or the marina. The cost of slip ownership, purchase price amortized using the cost of money, was about half of the cheapest public or private moorage anywhere around. Not only that, but the value of the slip since we purchased it has really appreciated - it's waterfront property. Other benefits: Workshop: Complete with long workbench, tools, etc. A good place to do everything from sanding and painting to work on some little project. Club House complete with kitchen: Available for a "sweetheart" rent for personal use - used for weddings, birthdays, family get-to-gethers, etc. Reciprocal Moorage: Self-explanatory. This has saved us money and sometimes this has been the only moorage available anywhere. PHRF Races: Membership in a Yacht Club is required to this satisfies this requirement. Junior Sailing Program: We have a junior sailing program for the kids. The club bought about 14 new one-design boats for the program. If you have any kids this is another cut-rate benefit. Most NorthEast locations near big cities or great sailing areas require ~$100+ a foot (or dock length which ever is greater) a season. Season (if your lucky) lasts April 15th to end of October.....usually much shorter than that

NY Harbor has 99/ft/season slips and moorings
The Hudson River Park Trust is setting up moorings for season and transients at Pier 40. They are seeking operators for other NYC pier locations. The Lincoln Harbor marina in Hoboken is 99/ft per season. Much cheaper than the other 2 marinas in NYHarbor.

Last Sunday at Hudson River Park Day, the president of the Trust himself, Mr. Balachandran told me the moorings were open for this season and more moorings next year at Pier 25!!! Pier 40 is the big pier with what looks like a large double warehouse on it. One pier north of the Holland tunnel vent. The mooring field and small dinghy dock are between the Vent and Pier 40. Ed

I speak, of course, of the World's Fair Marina on Flushing Bay, Queens. We pay for our 37 footer $63 a foot in a floating slip with water and power. A 30 footer would pay $60 a foot. Winter land storage is $32 and water storage $24.
