All things wind related are my downfall. KAP(kite assisted photography) isn’t a new concept but I was intrigued by a post last month of an onboard aerial photo shoot and found everything I needed to rig a small camera to a kite lying around the shop and the rest is history. The main ingredients are a fairly large stable kite, strong line, gloves, a simple camera with a time lapse setting or some old RC eqt to remotely trigger a shutter. Launched the kite from the cockpit up to about 100’, tied off to a cleat and attached the camera rig to the line and then continue paying out line. It was easier than it sounds and before I knew there were a dozen people pretty amazed at how great the shots were for such a basic thought. The kite stows in a bag the size of a nerf football and I just haul the line into a small bucket in the cockpit when I retrieve it. Here’s a link to one of many KAP sites, and another one to a guy single handing his 26’ double ender to Hawaii while shooting kite assisted video off the bow(it’s a must see). Have fun and post some boat shots if the bug bites you too. yep

Yep, Nice videos! I saw someone with a similar set up a yr or two ago, but he had a block on the kite and a "messenger" line going up with the kite through the block and back. Once the kite was up he attached the camera to the messager and pull it up to the kite and then back down when finished the kite would still be flying when retrieving the camera. Maybe this is the same system after all. I never saw the movie coming out of that but the one you link us to are very nice. regards, a.

Fabulous stuff

2 questions: How do you keep the camera pointed at the boat? How do you keep it out of the water?

FANTASTIC!

That video was AMAZING! Really Great! Singlehanding on a small boat going across the worlds largest ocean, and, taking your own movie. A real class act.

Sailing photos in great locations

Hope others will try this and share their favorites. I've posted the rest of my shots and will add to them on a flickr.com web site from the link below. As it turns out this hasn't been done a lot but it is a really unique way to get a lasting shot. All the work designing the eqt and how to build it cheaply can be found in the other links above or on the net, and at a nice one below too. Good luck in your efforts. At somewhere near a thousand hits here, someone has been interested. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7959956@N02/ http://scotthaefner.com/kap/equipment/ Aloha, and back to sailing;) Michael and Kelli
