I'm about to purchase an 88 Catalina 30. The sea trial is tomorrow 9/23 and the boat and engine survey is on 9/25. What items or potential concerns should I look out for? I am told the engine was rebuilt in 1998 and now has 550 hrs.

get a good surveyor

and stick to him like glue! ask questions, get him to explain everything he is looking at and why! our surveyor spent the whole day with us and I tried to take notes. he took about 4 hrs checking her stem to stern, up the mast and down the bilge. then we did the sea trials on the way to the marina for the haul out where he checked the bottom and thru hulls. your surveyor is who you should rely on, after all you are paying for his expert advise. good luck, we have really enjoyed our 88 C30!

Great boat

We bought our '88 Catalina 30 just last Oct and love it. One thing to watch closely for is blistering (ours had some). We spent a LOT of time with the surveyor and learned a great deal about the boat as he explained what he was looking for. Look us up, if you're ever up at Channel Islands Harbor. C30 prices

Hello, Next year I will probably be in the market for a Catalina 30 (or 34). If you don't mind me asking, what is the price of the boat you are looking at? Does it have any special features? Thanks, Barry

Wiring?

I bought my '89 last year and love it. I haven't had this problem myself, but in researching my purchase, I encountered a few owners who had needed to rewire. I don't know the details of their problems, and I don't have any reason to think the incidence is out of line, given the 1000s of C30s out there, but you may want to ask your surveyor to take a particularly close look at the wiring. Generally, if your rigging (standing or running) is original, its getting pretty old, so you'll want to try to get a good idea of how much you are likely spend updating it. Good luck!

$$$$$

the price for a nicely equipped 87-90 C30 here in FLA will run you anywhere between 28-36K depending of course on the boat. be prepared to send an additiona 2-5 for survey, haul-out, documention, etc, etc good luck!

You Guessed It

I was recently hoping to purchase an 88 C-30 that was very well equipted and appeared to be in terrific condition. Unfortunately, the total cost of preping & transporting this boat to the West Coast from Fl. including recommissioning and personal expenses was nearly 10k making the transaction prohibitively expensive even though the boat itself was very fairly priced. Fortunately I found another 88 C-30 locally and will have it surveyed in 2 days.
