Fred I agree, I use ablative also

But I think the first application (new boat by delear) was prep'ed correctly and it's flaked off in areas. I could paint over, but I'd like to make the edges of the flaked off areas as smooth as possible. You know ttrying to make it as smooth as possible, not a racer but I like to get it as best I can. I think it does make a little difference. Plus I want a good sander for all those other jobs that will pop up

Great trick from Alfred

A similar discussion took place on the Cal-list, and Alfred volunteered a trick which I will repeat hopefully with his permission. I haven't tried it yet but he says drywall installers use it. Make a water trap for your sander, to save the vac bearings from fine (possibly metallic) bottom dust. Take a five gallon bucket and punch two holes in the lid. Insert two shop vac rigid hose extensions, one so that its about 1/4 down from the top, the other one deeper (about 1/4 from the bottom). Attach the sander to the "low" tube and the shop vac to the "high" tube. The fill the bucket halfway with water and proceed sanding. The dust will be trapped in the bucket with no mess or wear to the vac. Some other responses: Miles must not be using a good orbital because they aren't agressive enough to "dig in", edge or not. Thats why they're so great. And thats a reason that the belt sander was better suited for stripping a hard surface. So far the favorite machines seem to be Porter-Cable, Fein, DeWalt and Bosch.

Captainjakeman

Tom, I'm a master carpenter and build cabinets and many other construction activities as well as work on my 36 Mariner. I recommend the Porter Cable 5", 5 hole, hook and loop orbital dual action sander. I've owned 2 over the last 15 years and done increadably heavy work with them and they still work great!!! Additionally, they do very good feathering. Dependign on the grit you use. Enjoy Jake
