Advice to repair/replace compression post ?

In the process of refurbishing my 1978 Oday 25 I've noticed rot in some of the interior wood. I've already replaced the starboard bulkhead and now am looing at the compression post on the port bulkhead. It didn't appear too bad at first, but closer examination with a knife reveals that about the lower 3" is completely rotten throughout. My question to anyone is, should I attempt a patched in repair (scarf in new wood or fabricated metal bracket) or replace the whole wodden post? Total replacement seems the elegant solution, but I'm not sure what wood to use, attachment method or the dimensions to look for. Any opinions or advice?

Ernest,easy fix, I replaced mine on a 27 just because the previous owner used pine, I used teak, cost a few $$ but looks great, now a few friends of mine used various woods and one used a brass pole.Just measure what you have or sole to roof. you should have plates on both ends (my plate are screwed into the sole and roof) make sure it's a tight fit, then if you use wood screw thru the bulkhead into the new post.good luck
