Advice on upgrades

Roger

I am about to purchase a C27, tiller/dinette, with roller furled jib. I have scoped out three boats that have these features, 1978-1979 vintage. There are some upgrades that these boats probably should have, but I am not sure of how vital they are. For example, one has angle irons added inside the cabin roof to strengthen the shroud mounts: one has a new tall rig: some have boarding ladders, etc. Is there anything that I should ABSOLUTELY look for in way of upgrades for a 1978-1979 vintage c27? Safety being priority 1, of course! (They are all A-4's, sadly, as the world seems to prefer diesels) Thanks! Roger on Nantucket Sound

Chainplates, Lower Shroud U-bolt Kit

I have '79, and the chainplates are generally looked upon as undersized. There is a replacement kit out there for them, as well as the spreader attachment for the lower shrouds. These are good items to replace, and I plan to do them this summer. Also, don't worry about that A-4, you're gonna love it if the previous owners have taken good care of it. Mine is a real gem. Good Luck, and fair winds... Rob

Survey?

Might I suggest a survey. Then ask the surveyor if he knows of the upgrades done on the model. He or She should know about Catalina's and the factory upgrades. A safety factor not to be missed.

Upgrades

Well, here's the list of upgrades to TASHTEGO. It will be apparent where my bank balance has gone. IMPROVEMENTS TO TASHTEGO 1.New stem fitting with double anchor roller from Catalina Direct. Note that I couldn’t install it as shipped as it wouldn’t go through the slot in the rub rail molding. I ground the longer part of the tang off and it fits nicely. 2.Starboard™ grating in anchor locker which I made myself. My anchor rode was always wet. The grating holds the anchor and rode about two inches off the bottom of the anchor locker and it stays dry now. 3.New Light fixtures on mast (anchor, masthead, spreaders). Just a precaution as I had the mast down anyway. 4.New stainless steel spreader sockets from Catalina Direct. 5.New masthead sheaves for rope halyards and new halyards from Catalina Direct. 6.New spinnaker crane (from Catalina Direct), block and halyard (from West Marine). 7.“U” bolt lower chain plates from Catalina Direct. These come with the “angle irons” that you have seen. 8.New bronze thru-hulls and sea cocks for head intake and outlet, sink/icebox drain and engine raw water intake. 9.Solid state points from Moyer Marine. 10.Fresh water cooling from Indigo. The Moyer version fits on the fron of the A4 and doesn't allow the crank to be used when the batteries are dead* 11.Electric fuel pump from Moyer Marine.* 12.Fuel filter from Moyer Marine.* 13.Oil filter from Moyer Marine.* 14.Raw water strainer from Defender.* 15.New teak electrical panel which I made myself. 16.New bimini top from Sailrite. 17.New main outhaul block from West Marine. 18.Starboard™ steps on boarding ladder from Boat US. 19.New stainless steel exhaust thru-hull with flapper from Catalina Direct.* 20.New propane stove (from Defender) and locker (from West Marine).* 21.Rebuilt galley freshwater pump with a kit from West Marine. *Means purchased but not yet installed Any of these improvements on the boat will be valuable and should influence your decision. The only other improvement which I have not tackled yet is to replace the main cabin bulkhead where the chain plates for the uppers are fastened. It is common for the chain plate fittings to have leaked water into the plywood causing decay. I expect to get everything done and the boat back in the water sometimer this century.

THANK-YOU NOTE

To All who responded: Many thanks! One of the best reasons to buy at C27 is you folks! I am pretty close to joining your ranks, if the boat gets through the survey in decent shape. Here in the northeast, excitment mounts as the sailing season apporaches. Enjoy! ROGER

Roger, what did you pay for your 27?

Hi Roger, What did you end up paying? Any problems with the survey? Thanks! Mark
