Oh Crap, my last post didn't make it, what I wanted to say was that there is a sail provider out of Asia, that a lot of locals have gone through. There sail prices are incredible when compared to out local prices, check out the link and the testemonials. I can assure you, you won't be dissappointed. There rebate on my sail was 50% , since there original cost was quoted at about the same price of what 3 different suppliers were here, which was slightly more than 5000 bucks for one sail. Then they give a progressive rebate depending on the normal quote, mine being 50% of quoted price. So in my case the sail would be delivered to my house in 4 weeks form date of payment for only $2600.
It was an awesome price....

Those dimensions are only part of the measurements taken for a custom sail. For an example of what Warren is talking about, take a look at these measurement forms from the North Sails website:

wow never thought so much was involved but after viewing the links you provided I find it hard to understand why all is necessary ,for instance feeder height (which helps them determine slug placement??) and four different measurements for reef hook???and not sure if I can estimate the three stages of mast bend:(

ok,so now i am so confused maybe ill scrap the idea of a new sail ,and buy a new riding mower ,where the biggest decision is cupholder or not ..

heh, heh... I'm with you... When I've purchased sails online, even with "stock" sails, the loft will make small adjustments to fit your particular boat... so they will ask some of those questions... Fitting Roller furling sails can require modifications to a stock sail depending on the drum and swivel locations... affecting hoist, deck clearance, clew height... etc.

The mast bend estimates you mentioned would help them with draft shape. A fractional's bendy type mast would seem to offer more variation in draft depth that telephone pole mast head rigged boat like my C 27..... but it's cool that they ask... and use ... the data... that's why you pay premiums for top tier sails....

My best advice, is find a sail maker that will come sail on your boat with you and do the measurements themselves. If they mess up, they will fix it. If you mess up a measurement you just have to live with it.

Additionally in my experience almost all (good) sailmakers will give your rig a good look over or tune while there making measurements and if not help adjust things to make the boat sail better (they want you to be happy with how well the boat sails with new sails after all), at least give you advice on what should be changed. They will consider things like sheeting angles and clew heights vs track lengths and visibility, and a number of things that you wouldn't be able to do on your own without their experience.

no two sailboats are exactly the same (not even in most one design fleets), and no two boats are ever sailed the same, so why would you expect the sails to be universal?
