I have a Hunter 260... and use a Honda 9.9 engine. I love it. It starts easy and burns little gas. I believe the Hunter weights close to 5000 lbs, so I would think you've be fine with even a smaller engine. A 3 gallon gas can would probably last all summer.

We have a 4 stroke 7.5 hp Honda on our 28 ft. Lancer

buying motor
Tim, I also have a 22', mine is a Venture. When I bought it used it had a 6HP on it. Several times when caught out in a "small craft warning" or (gale warning" I could barely get back to my dock. When I buy another for replacement I will buy a 7.5 or 8 HP motor, possibly a 4 stroke. Duane (novelman)

5hp on my Catalina 22, plenty of power for most occasions. Sure, there might be times I wish I had an 8, but the extra weight is a deal killer for me.

8 HP Honda 4 Stroke
I had an O'Day 25 and went from a 10HP Envinrude 2 stroke to a 8HP Honda 4 stroke. Fantastic motor - started on the first pull. Super Quiet - clean burned 1/2 gallons and hour at Hull speed. And you save the hassle and money from mixing 2 cycle oil with the gas.

8 horse Honda 4 stroke prop problems.
When we spend our years live aboard cruising in the early 2ooo's we met 2 fellow cruiser that had both been out for 4 years and used Honda 4 stroke short shaft motors on their dinks. Both motors were fairly new(since 1995)and suffered from the center housing of the propeller and propeller shaft comming loose. They had to drill a hole through the prop and hub and install a bolt to keep it all together. It's a bit of a problem in the middle of nowhere. As of late 2003 they did not know of any factory remedy to correct this. They both loved the engines for ease of starting, power and fuel consumtion. As far as they knew this only happened on the 8 hp engine. I have a 10hp Honda and there are absolutely no problems at all. Ray

Few Questions
I have a Yamaha 4 hp four stroke on my capri 22 about 2200#. It pushes the boat to easily with the thruddle at start position on a calm day. Ask yourself a few questions. Do you have a good sailing boat, do you have to go threw any bridges or inlets with waves or current, what is your experience level with sailing etc. I recommend to have at least a 20 inch shaft outboard.

It sounds like the advise so far has been good. In addition, I'd give great weight the conditions you're likely to encounter. While a 4 or 5 HP is probably fine, I might move to the higher side if I had to contend with currents...as in a river. Another important thought might be concerning service. Unless you're a DIY guy, knowing that a good Mercury, or Honda, or whatever shop is conveniently close by might tilt your decision on brand. Be sure to spend a few extra bucks to get a long shaft motor; you won't regret it. Good luck

Extra Long shaft
I have bought 2 Johnson Sailmasters in the past. For your boat 8HP ought to be plenty. As far as I am concerned, its always a little better to be slightly overpowered than under powered. The Sailmaster has a longer shaft than most which is very important with following seas or waves, the exhaust comes out the sides of the lower part rather than the center. This gives you better power in reverse as you are not backing into your own bubbles and also, although it is a pull start, it still has a small alternator to charge your batteries. If you are on a very small lake and never have any waves and are never further than you can see your dock then and only then should you consider a smaller motor. Tony B
