On a main with 4 full battens, what "rules-of-thumb" apply to adjusting batten tension in various wind conditions?

The recent October, 2003 "Sail" magazine has a nice article about battens that may answer your question. Dick K.

First basic rule...

...is to keep the top batten (or at least the rear of it) in line with the boom. As far as the flexibility of battens, you want the battens straighter at the leech, but allowing for some bend toward the middle of the sail. With this in mind, the battens high in the sail should in most cases be less stiff than those farther down.
