Dickinson again

Put a Dickinson Newport Propane Fireplace aboard Pearson 34 last spring. Cozy for chilly nights 45-50d. Nice compact unit. Yes the install may be more than you want to do for Alabama, but it does draw outside combustion air & vent outside, so pretty safe in that regard. Yes it is another propane line in the cabin.

Terry the lantern burns very clean

The coleman type lanterns burn very efficently and produce very little if any carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion. The beauty of the lantern is that a tankful which is less than a quart will burn for about 8 hours. The main advantage of the lantern is that many people have them and use them for light when camping etc. We discovered their grat heating ability by accident. We were fishing using the lantern in the cockpit. When we decided to go below we took the lantern below with us to play cards. It heated up the cabin so much that we had to leave the companionway hatch fully open. Always have ventilation when burning anything anyway in a confined space. Good sleeping bags will keep you warm while you are asleep. So we never burn anything while we are sleeping. The lantern is far from a perfect heat source but works OK if you only need heat a few times a year. For regular use a properly installed furnace is required. Here on the gulf coast it is rare to even get a frost in January and the water is usually above 50 degrees. Tom

GARY...LOOK at RAD's POST !!!!

GARY...I looked at a MR HEATER (portable BUDDY) yesterday. Theyre only $69. and you can purchase an adaptable hose in case a large TANK is preferred. Otherwise, theyre designed for "INTERIOR" use. Real light, easily handled and "SAFE" ! I viewed one at TRACTOR SUPPLY CO, also known as TSC (in case you have a store in your area. BY THE WAY: RAD's post is on PAGE 2 of this featured THREAD....

Can't beat MR Heater

I've been using a Mr heater for about 4 yrs in my sailboats. There great! They have a low OX sensor even though I leave the slider open a bit on the companion way. Whats realy nice ,you can mount them on a bulkhead. I find that just the pilot light is enough to heat my cabin in my 27 Islander at night.

how level does Mr. Heater have to be?

I bought a Mr. Heater last year and didn't have a chance to mount it on board yet. Does the mercury switch turn itself off too easily when the boat is being tossed off level by water motion? Will I find myself having to reset it constantly, or is it able to take some bouncing around without shutting off?

Mr. Buddy

I dont have my heater handy, but i believe the name on mine was Mr. Buddy. Its probably the same as Mr Heater. I bought it at Academy Sporting Goods when a local Propane Supplier recommended it to me as being the safest. Has low Oxygen shutoff as well as will shut off when tipped over. It served me well when anchored in PIRATES COVE this past winter....and you remember how cold it was this past Jan. and Feb. I shut it off when i went to sleep or else it would have cooked me out of the boat. I had/have a Catalina 30. I had also bought a hose adapter so that i could hook it up to a small 11 Lb propane botttle.
