I have been sailing a 1976 Catalina 27 for many years and have decided to move up. I would appreciate any advice on what to look out for when considering a used 30. I am looking at a 1991 tall rig. Thanks
Rob, I can't understand why no one has responded yet. I had a 30 (1992)standard rig for eight years with few problems. Loved the boat and enjoyed sailing her. I had a little delaminatioon on the rudder bottom and occasionally a fuse in the started circuit would get cranky but just clean up the contavcts and that was fine. Other than those two things the boat was virtually trouble free.
I have had my Catalina 30 ( 1978 hull # 1188) for alittle over one year . Love it Just spent 22 day's on her in the Abacos with my wife and sister-inlaw . Can't think of anything to tell you other than general boat maintenace . Maybe take a look at the mast step , for compression . Rob
I own a '91 C30 tall rig. In the four years I've had it it's been mostly trouble free. Had some blisters though and I'll be hauling this winter after two years so I'll get another look. There's a harness upgrade that should be done in the starter motor circuit - easy to do but shouldn't be overlooked. If the jib roller furling is a Hood line-drive system (continuous loop), they make an upgrade for it. It slips in heavy air when partially reefed. The 25XP is ample power as an auxiliary. Sails well - good flexibility with tall rig for light air days and the single reef works well in heavy air. Good luck.
In 1988 we purchased a new Catalina 30 which we had for 10 years. NEVER had a leak. Had a few blisters, but they are very common with the fresh water and extreme temps on our lake. We then purchased a 1981 Hunter Cutter which we sold to get a 1995 Catalina MKII 36. Have owned 3 Catalinas and all have been great boats.
