I am very close in buying a 1985 C27. It has an inboard diesel with 465 hours. It is a tall rig with a fin keel. I was told that it draws 3'5" of water. The owners of the boat has stepped up to a 36 footer. It has a roller furling, and the sails are in good shape. It also has full cockpit canvas. What are some weak points that I should look at? He is asking $18,000 and I am thinking of offering $16,000. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. I can also be emailed direct at morty@i2k.com Thanks

HAVE IT SURVEYED!

Sorry for shouting but for that amount of money, you really should have it surveyed by a certified marine surveyor. Never take a sellers word for anything cuz you're going to be the one stuck with it if he/she lied. NAMS & SAMS are the two big organizations for surveyors and each will give you a listing of surveyors in your area. NAMS: www.namsurveyors.org SAMS: www.marinesurvey.org Please please please, before you make an offer, get the boat surveyed! Good luck!! LaDonna

Survey

I agree with the previous posts - get a survey and make the offer contingent upon a satisfactory survey! Rodney Kidd C-38 #297, Flying Bear

Points to ponder........

I too have an '85 with an inboard Universal M-18 (14HP). My boat was in bristol condition, but I also had a professional surveyor do a complete out of the water go-over. Some things to examine before purchase: 1) closely examine the keel bolts/nuts in the bilge. Most boats I saw have either no recognizable nuts, or had SS fittings that were in very good condition (which my boat did); 2) check engine for condition and prop shaft/strut/and cutless bearing 3) Examine the hull when its out of the water for blister problems. '85 was a year that manufacturer gelcoat/glass had some problems. $16-18K is about the going price for a C27 with an inboard in good condition. I highly suggest it over the outboard-It will give you back the extra added cost at trade-up time. With over 6000 built keep looking till you find the one thats right. After I looked at approx 15 boats, they could be grouped into two kinds- "project boats" that'll get you on the water next season, or decent boats that an owner can answer any question without delay. I suggest you select the second kind.

I just bought one for $17,000

I just bought one in mint condition for $17,000 this spring. You must see the bottom. There is a good surveyor in Holland, MI. Steven Drake, (616) 847-1539. He will let you know about value as well. Good luck
