I have come across a older man that I am considering taking in trade for a 1976 Irwin 30 with a 5'draft for some minor work on his house.. He had it pulled out of the water 10 years ago to do some sanding and upgrading to the interior and fix a prow stanchion that he bent hitting a pylon while docking. Plus it was time to do new ablative ect. Now his age is taken him and he no longer will be using it.

I currently have a cherub 27 believe it or not .. mint beyond mint condition... but I have found I would like a larger boat but not to big.

This boat upon inspection of the hull, keel and detailed sounding of deck and hull checked out all the hull to deck hardware ...keel bolts spotless, no cracks or smiles or blisters to be found.

The interior needs a bit of wood work to the head doors and such, But over all this boat is stunning as it sits..

So I would like to know from anyone familiar with these Irwin 30s or similar era and type of there reliability, what problems there prone to have... how they sail.. much weather helm?

Read one post that one guy said that his Irwin 30 moderate seas and good 20 kt wind would heel to the deck..

So anyone want to interject and spit out praise or detriment I would love to hear from you.

Please love to hear the mean and the joyous of such a boat. Really love the size and shape of this boat.. its a tall rig as well. and comes with 4 very excellent condition sails. Also trying to determine if these year and models came with Steering wheel or was added after. For the ones ive seen in the past were all rudder steer.

I had a '73 Irwin 32 for a dozen years and really liked the boat, and in some ways, wish I still had it. Irwins, like the older Hunters, are a mix of good and bad. Some Irwins were built pretty well and others not so well. The fact that is still a viable boat says something. Be sure the decks don't have any soft spots and expect the windows to leak.
