We,total sailing newbies, just bought our first sailboat, a nice 1984 OD 222. We have always had powerboats, but were fascinated by sailboats. Wow, they have about as much in common as apples and oranges!The previous owners (We are 3rd owners)said the boat had originally had a furler before they purchased her, but it wasn't there when they took possession. Anyways, they never used the whisker pole when they put up the gennaker, just put it up like a big jib on the two occasions that they used it. We test "sailed" on a calm day, so never really got to see the gennaker or any of the sails full of wind. We have since sailed her with reefed mainsail and regular jib last weekend (lotsa wind). I have tried looking in books and internet for info, but there isn't much to find. Most often I see it used with a furler. I don't really want to have to buy a furler. All the sails on this boat are the originals.(main, jib, 150% jib, gennaker) Well kept, used little. Any advice on this gennaker is appreciated.
