I currently own a 1975 Ericson. I am very seriously considering purchasing a 1984 Catalina 30 in order to better accomodate my family for coastal cruising along the S. Cal coast and Baja. Ok, now for the advice part of my question. I can likely get the '84 C 30 for $17,500. It has a fairly new Universal 25 hp diesel (less than 80 hrs) It is generally a boat with nice "bones" in need of cosmetics, canvas and upholstery, vinyl cushions for the cockpit and possibly a mainsail. I am new to the Catalina line but it is apparent that you Cat owners are a passionate group and think very highly of these sailboats. Can you give me your thoughts about this vintage of Cat 30 and feedback as to whether the price sounds reasonable? Also, by the way, this is an excellent forum...you all should pat your selves on the back...the archives are excellent and helpful to prospective newbies to the Catalina line...thanks!!

Great deal

If there is nothing structurally wrong with that boat, you have an excellent deal on your hands. Of course you'll want to have it surveyed by a professional before buying, but sounds like a good move to make. Ericsons are great boats but if your family feels more comfortable on a C30, by all means go for it. Make it a family project where everyone gets involved and feels a sense of ownership (ever seen "Cap'n Ron"?). BTW, that year/model generally goes for about $30K. LaDonna

BUY IT!

Sounds too good to be true! That is an killer price! Like LaDonna said "GET A SURVEY". Either the owner does not know of it's worth, or he really does! If it all checks out you will have a great boat. Enjoy fixing it up with the family. A good looking boat is like a woman, she sometimes just needs new cosmetics! I bought a Cat 30 1983, 2 years ago. $22K Excellent condition. P.S. If you don't buy the boat, would you tell me the seller?

Sounds Like a good deal

JB I agree with everyone on this it does sound like a good deal. If the boat is in Mission bay then you needn't worry about tabernacling the mast. If the boat is somewhere else and you plan on keeping it in Mission Bay east of the Bridge then figure on about $2,000 to have the mast tabernacled.(Check with Derek at Northstar Propellers as he is the local expert on this) If it is already tabernacled and has an electric mast winch then that is really cool as this winch usually runs about $300 and makes getting under the bridge really easy This vintage boat has sometimes had issues with blistering gelcoat so make sure you haul it and have that checked. Otherwise these are great boats, they sail great and they cruise great. We also race them level class thursday nights in the summer out of MBYC.Big Fun!!! PS you have the right engine. I don't care what anyone says with the big universal you can get 6 knots heading upwind to Catalina and with the 11 horse in lousy weather you are looking at 4-4.5. PPS Before anyone with the small universal yells at me I gotta say that there is nothing wrong with going 4-4.5 knots....:) Have fun Hugh Vanderspek
