Dan, I have a 1983 H54, which I bought from the original owner last year. He took good care of it, but at some point he apparently painted the deck and hull. I have some streak marks on the hull, from water draining through the toe-rail cutouts near the stern. What is your advice for cleaning the streaks, as well as any specific advice for restoring shine and luster to a painted hull? Eric Lorgus s/v Impulse 83H54

Painted Gelcoat (Eric)

The general consensus seems to be any product containing Oxalic acid to clean scum streaks. It is available under different brand names soch as clenz-all along with its own name in powdered and liquid form. As far as paint, it depends on what type, check the Island Girl line of products, and maybe a post to it's president Dr. Willis in the gelcoat

Not much you can do, short of

repainting. Stripping the paint will not do much good because before you paint over a gelcoat, you have to sand it until the gloss is gone.

Clean the streaks and then wax!

It works well on the paint on my boat.
