Hey Everyone, I've decided to purchase a 27' Sun sailboat for liveaboard (first boat owned). I've been trying to come up with some ideas for a diesel cabin heater, diesel water heater, refrigerator, etc. Basically I am trying to make it as comfortable as possible. If possible, I would like to use these items while underway and not just at the dock. Have any ideas or where I should look for these items? Do they make a tankless diesel fired water heater? I'm having a difficult time finding small enough units and something reasonably priced. Any information or ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. Scott

Insurance

Here's a thought; My friend Howard has a 42' Valient. The insuror refused to cover the boat with a tankless (propane) water heater.??? Another aspect to consider.

Equipment

If you plan to live aboard I would suggest to look for a boat that is already fully equipped for that purpose, rather than buying a bare boat and installing proper equipment. The coast of buying new stuff is extremely expensive and is equal to the money spent trying to install all these things. Unless of course if in your former life, you were a marine electrician, plumber, welder, sander, painter, gelcoat expertise and have three degrees in marine engineering. Another thing to consider is the value of the boat that not increase significally even if you have all the bells and whisles aboard. Lastly the time and effort necessary, apart from the money spent on useless junk trying to get the whole thing running, is not realy worth it: I would guess that it would take a year to install the few things you mentionned, (unless of course your former life permits it) Trust me, I've been there, done that. Sincerely, Jean

I have a friend that lives on a 27 foot boat.

A 27' is too small. How do you think your going to fit everything in that such a small boat. My friend freezes in the winter. She uses a portable space heater to keep warm. It just about keeps her water from freezing. You can do it if you have to, but I would suggest moving to a warm state!
