One of the projects I've been wanting to do is to change the ugly yellowish foam backed plastic liner on the inside walls of the vberth, the aft cabin walls and main salon walls. one question is do I install a product over the existing stuff or do I remove it and reinstall a similar product. Is there a foam backed product out there and whats it called? One thought was to remove it all and install indoor/outdoor carpet or a Nautilex product(did this on a Chris Craft restoration in the vberth and it looked decent)

I'm going with a tear out

And then some sanding, then going with RFP.( reinforced fiberglass panel) on the insides. Sold at all home improvement big boxes, Same stuff used on the wall of the restarants i run, Easy install, easy maintence, very low cost. We hose it down at night when cleaning up, very durable.( in the rest. not the boat). Along with new carpet should update the interior greatly. Pray for Wind, Lugeman

Higgs,

I would guess his boat is a 78 ODay 32 centercockpit named Free Spirit and that he used to own a 1961 Chris Craft Connie and a Bristol 24. I'll let you figure out how I knew that. ;)

Lining Material

It's called "headliner" and can be bought at this link, or at several other marine stores. Try googling for it.....or yahooing or whatever you wish to use for a search engine. I removed mine (it was 32 year old vinyl, not fabric) and it was a messy, nasty job, but now that everything is cleaned, sanded, primed and painted it looks nice.

I have always considered that stuff to be a fire hazard

I'm with Marcia, tear it out tend to the cosmetics underneath and paint. One quart of paint will cover 100 square feet for less than 20 dollars. If it gets dinged a nickles worth will repair the damage.

Nick, Enjoy the warm winters in Florida. This one hasn't been much to speak of

a little bit of warm a little bit of cold, some rain, some snow. The sun climbs higher each day and soon the geese will head north. If you are still here at the equinox watch for the spring migration. The full moon and the equinox fall almost on the same day. Today I go and pull my propeller and take it to a shop for repitching. It is 13x15 a little too much pitch so I can get 2 inches taken out for about a hundred bucks. A bargain when I only paid 75 for it 4 years ago . Enjoy the season. Fair winds. Ross

Nick, still snowing

got a dump of 30 cm ( or a foot) of snow couple days ago, was still digging out yesterday. Boat is still buried in snow and our bay is a solid block of ice. One good thing is all this snow will help the water levels on the Great Lakes to some degree.

A few years ago

I helped a friend redo the liner in the V-berth of an aging Hunter 27. We used some fairly smooth tightly woven indoor/outdoor carpet in a neutral color. Put it on with "Liquid Nails." Looked great, didn't cost much, and was easy to do...

cabin clean up

When I bought my boat 8 years ago It came complete with some rugging that some ambitious good meaning soul had glued along the cabin walls. I have no idea of how long ago, the boat is a 75. The cabin didnt smell to good. I ripped out all the dirty mildewed rugging and sanded off the old glue What was left was the old Pearson sprayed on finish of yesteryear I gave it an additional light sanding 1 coat of pettit primer and a finish coat of pettit topside paint. The odor was gone. The cabin is bright and clean. Its now easy to maintain and touch up. All fittings and hardware are no longer covered up and easy to maintain. To the sailor thats contemplating gluing rugs, vinyl or whatever: I wouldnt, just paint it.

I'm leaning that way

I'm in the process of an interior redo, and find myself leaning more and more towards just painting. I want to brighten up the interior, which has lots of teak and had the vinyl on the ceiling and walls. Found some stuff at Lowes, made by Valspar, which is a urethane porch and deck enamel. Comes in a satin, semi gloss, and high gloss. I tried some of the high gloss on the back side of a cockpit table, and it is the whitest, glossiest color imaginable. Probably going to end up doing the ceiling and walls with it. Not very expensive, and can just cover it up if it ends up not being what I want.

Thanks for all the replys

The link to Sailrite was great I have there link but never knew it was called headliner because its installed on the sides in my boat, one of the areas is the aft cabin bed sides and a nice fabric type product will feel and look nice in that area. I think the amount of time I would spend removing the old stuff, sanding and preping for paint is way too much work and not going to happen so it looks like a call to sailrite for some samples of headliner is my next step. One good thing about this project is I can do one section of the boat at a time before spring launch (March 27th) even if it gets cold because I can get the inside of the boat nice and warm. speaking of wheather we've had it pretty good so far without any major storms. Rick, I remember peeking into your boat and it looked great and the inside cabin of Kukulcan had me drooling (Kukulcan is a 40 ft ODay)but didn't really pay attention to the headliner,I will now cause when I see you guys in July my project will be done. Nick, are you living on the boat this summer in Greenport or bringing it back to Florida?
