Hunter 376 Warsash, England --
Two Performance Points

One evening at supper I sat next to Lars Bergstrom (who would not admit to designing my 376). I told him I had ordered the deep keel version. His immediate response was "Ja so you will get the better performance". Second point - Every rating rule gives benefit to shallow draft boats. It amounts to approx 1% round a triangular course so, I guess, 2% speed advantage on the beat. Not much really but it sure lets you know you are quicker - and also demoralises the opposition. The Naval Architects know the true position.

Damn Cliff, your reading my mind!!

I've just been looking at a sweet Tripp 33 on ebay.(be still my pounding heart) I checked this same boat out when it was first built. Bill Tripp and I spent a good deal of time going over her. I should have bought her back then!! Oh well. Problem is I've got a fast boat with a slow PHRF. It's hard to give up that winning combination.

I owned a Tripp 26 before the 28.5

Before owning my 28.5 I had a Tripp 26, Coolest boat I have ever sailed on and I drool over the Tripp 33. The 26 is a very wet boat to sail but what a boat. I could see a 34 foot something off on the horizen and after a short while we had reeled them in. I have been keeping and eye on the 33's for sale and what they are selling for. I am thinking that 2 more season with the 28.5 and I will put her on the market and look real serious at the Tripp 33. One sold close by in the $30K range, I would be useing it as a cruiser when not racing and I stumble over this part of it. Not so sure how it will work for the wife and I just at the boat for a weekend of sailing or doing our 1-2 week vaction on the boat. The Tripp 26 was a rocket it is such a sweet sailing boat. I had a Asy kite from my H 25.5 that I kept for the Tripp for a crusing sail. We poped it up and were crusing along on a reach going 10 knots plaining and had a roster tail coming off the rudder. Biggest down fall is we need a camper at the lake since we live a little over an house from the boat. SO after 2 season with the Tripp is got to the point that if it was raining we went home. On the 28.5 we just get out another book. Looking at the interior on the 33 it looks like we could do weekends on the boat even if it rains. I will need to ge the wife on one and spend a few hours on one to see how it will feel. Another draw back is when crusing the cockpit though big for sailing is not so comfertable for sitting at the dock. But I still drool and keep looking at them. Sailing did a review of the 33 a few years ago and I re-read it every so often to keep the drool flowing. It has a PHRF # of 78 I think, and will be hard to be competitive with that number unless I have very good crew. Even if we don't do as well it will be such a sweet boat to sail. The lifting keel for docking is very attractive and just thinking about sailing on it makes me lose sleep and the need to wipe off the drool. Cliff

OH how I hear ya!! ;D

I agree that the crew is the biggest part of the equation. You need 5 trained regulars and a couple stand by's. Anything less and you're going to get wacked. But, IF you you can put 5 reg's together you're gonna be awful tough to beat. This boat can run down boats half again as big as she is, no worries.
