Help! I recently saved a 1970 Catalina 22 from destruction. It now sits next to my house, professionally blocked up for the winter. As I sail a Tanzer 31 regularly, this "little boat" may or may not be sailed by me. But I need alot of information before deciding to commission it or not. Where can I get the vessel blueprints, sail configurations, engine requirements, repair costs, etc.?

Catalina 22 Ohio
C-22

Hi, If she's a 1970, that's pretty early date. Wonder what's the Hull/Sail number is on her. Good choice.. Much info on this boat on the net. Check out Catalina Direct: http://www.catalinadirect.com/ Get the Owner's Handbook: http://www.catalinadirect.com/handbookc-22.html The forum here is great and they also have a forum there for questions. http://www.catalinadirect.com/handbookc-22.html Also check out the http://www.catalina22.org/ It's worth it to join. ~Bilbo

If indeed a 70 C-22

If this boat is a 1970 version, it could be very desirable to C-22 class racers. See if a metal plate is on the inside transom with a hull number on it. This is important for it may indicate the way they affix the keel to the hull. The very early C-22's attach the keel solely with a bolt through the keel that rests upon some fiberglass supports. As this arrangement was subject to leaks, later boats use a keel hanger set up that keeps the pin outside the vessel. However, this earlier design is superior to the newer design for one may more easily remove the keel for maintenance and it has none of the problems associated with keel hanger bolts. Look inside the port forward seat and see if a bolt is showing on the bottom. Do not confuse this with the keel lock down bolt that is higher up and should have a t fitting on it. If you see this bolt upon which the keel swings, then you have a valuable boat. A repair will eliminate the leak problem, but that may be a bit more than what you want to get into. Nevertheless, if you decide not to keep the boat, I would try to sell it on Chip Ford’s list. You would need someone like myself to get it onto the list for you.

1970 C-22

I have a 1970 C-22 #81. When I picked my boat up at the factory all that was given to me was the bill of sale and a brochure. I have the keel bolt through the hull, I had leaks only on the side of the nut. My boat almost sunk because of the keel bolt leak. I solved this by using a big gob of bondo over the keel bolt. no more leaks! (The fix for the leak was to epoxy a shaving cream cap over the bolt, this was told to me by the salesman in 1970.) The bondo I will grind out when needed. Check the keel bolt for wear, as some I have seen have almost worn through the keel bolt. These should be checked. The Gudgeons were a recall item also. The new Gudgeons have a reforcing piece of Stainless Steel (W.M. heavy duty Gudgeon by Schaefer page 1081 of 2005 catalog) I didn't find a need to change mine as it was too hard to get to the mounting screws. Check the traveler bar across the rudder area, these work loose as the wood backing was not covered with fiberglas and dry rot sets in, this happened to me. I have just replaced the keel cable after 35 years of use, I found that the only fraying of the cable was at the winch area where it bends tightly. I have increased the diameter of the spool shaft by using some P.V.C pipe cut to fit increasing the diameter a small amount to see if this will cut down the extreme bending of the cable. I hope that this helps some. Fair winds AL

Correction!

Thanks for the reply, as well as the other posters helpfulness. I erred when I said that my "adopted"boat was a 1970 Catalina 22. It's a 1971, hull number 471, still pretty ancient. But boy is it well-built! I was cleaning it up for the winter snooze, and spent some time below checking out the various systems/berths, etc. What a beautiful "pocket cruiser" for 1971! Another question: what the heck is that metal(?)cylinder that comes up on the bow just behind the bow pulpit? Is it, as I suspect, an actual rope/chain locker tube for the anchor? Anyone out there, help again!

Metal Tube

That metal tube could be for an anchor chain, however, this would have been a PO installation as I am pretty sure Catalina has not ever offered this as an option. It was not until about 1985 that Catalina put in an anchor locker. Another possibiliy is for a red and green bow light. While lights were not required for 71 boats, Catalina may have had them as an option. But my guess is that this not for a light. Still another possibility is for a holding tank extraction tube. At the time when that boat was made, porcelain heads were common on smaller boats as oppoed to plastic porta potties.

Time to check further...

Part of the problem now is that it's starting to get cold again in New York. But I guess that I'll just have to take my trusty flashlight, screwdriver, and other tools and find out what the heck this tube is for!Otherwise, I'll spend all winter wondering. Again, thanks.

metal tube

Your metal tube maybe a support bracket. I have heard that if too much strain is placed on the bow section of the deck from the for stay, that the deck will start to seperate from the hull. This gives the Catalina 22 a mouth to scoop up water. I have seen pictures of turnbuckels being used from the bow Eye to the support plate of the forestay. I have not seen a tube. Many people have installed turnbuckels inside the boat from the lower shrouds deck pins to a point on the bulkhead where the upper shroud brackets attach to the bulkhead. I hope that this may give you a clue. Fair winds AL

Thanks, Al!

This issue is getting quite interesting...I guess that I'll have to heave myself onboard and take some pictures, then transfer them to this forum. Someone out there must know what this mysterious 'tube'is!Again, thanks for all the support and thought evident in the replies. I've been sailing(something)since about 1968, and the sailing community has always been great!!
