Are there documented procedures for adjusting the shroud lines following a move and the re-stepping of the mast on an early Catalina 30? Any help appreciated. Mike Douglas

restepping mast and shrouds

Hi Mike - As indicated in the other posts, there is a wealth of info out there on tuning rigs. Yours is particularly easy to do since it is a single spreader rig. For starters, if you are happy with the way the rig is tuned before unstepping the mast, make sure you tape the bottom end of each shroud and backstay at the turnbuckle to give you an indication how far to tighten them to upon re-rigging. Best of luck! Trevor

Mast removal

I had the yard remove my mast last week. Prior to that I marked all of my turnbuckles to help make it easier to adjust in the spring. Funny thing is that they all of my marks are still in the same place. Is it possible to just losen the backstay on a Cat 30 and be able to knock out the pins. I asked one of the yard workers, but he was not the one working on my boat. He said sometimes if the wind is blowing right, it puts enough tension on one side to cause the nast to shift enough to knock out the pins without touching the turnbuckles.Does any of this make sense. My stick is down, no visible damage (other than the bill) and no complaints, just curious.

For Warren: Yes, it's possible to just loosen the

backstay and remove the clevis pins from the turnbuckle tangs without adjusting the turnbuckles. Our yard unsteps out mast each year this way although they generally loosen all the turnbuckles just a couple of turns.

Thanks for your input!

Just wanted to say thanks. I'm also interested in "mast tuning" utilizing a "loose gauge". I need to find somewhere the recommended settings. Any suggestions? Mike D.

The instructions that come with the Loos Gauge

will give the the specs for your size standing rigging cables.
