Okay, I have checked the archives, but I can't find it, so I'll ask the question. I have a single lever gear/throttle system on my Oday 25 with a saildrive. I assume that this is a common system to many boats. The gear cable is out of adjustment, and whatever I try does not work. So far, I can adjust it so that it goes into forward, but not reverse, or it goes into reverse but not forward. There has got to be something simple that I am not doing. This doesn't look like rocket science, but it's beginning to feel that way. Is there a book, web page, or any source that lays out a step by step method for adusting the cable? Or better yet, is there a trick to this that can be explained in short order? Thanks in advance. Alan

Hi Alan - I'm not familiar with your setup, but do you know if the pedestal is an Edson or Whitlock or ?? Perhaps the manufacturer's site might have some info for you. Sorry I can't help, Trevor

Gear cable adjusting
Thanks for the responses. I don't know the manufacturer. I wish I did, but the unit has no markings to help. It isn't a pedestal. The shift knob is inserted into a hole on a round casing that is attached to the port side of the lower part of the cockpit (at about foot level). Push the knob forward, and it goes forward, reverse for reverse, straight up for neutral. The mechanism on the inside consists of two levers, one for the throttle and one for the gears. I have focused my adjustments on the cable sleeve where it attaches to the shift lever on the engine. I assume this would be at the transmission. I am going to try adjusting the cable sleeve where it attaches to the shift lever on the other end and see if that helps. Then I am going to offer an award to anyone on the dock who can fix the dang thing. I have spent so much time down there, and even got sick from fumes one day (my fault for not ventilating enough) that I don't think I can do it anymore; however, I learn something new every time I work on it. I'm beginning to think that reverse is just a luxury anyway.
