Adjustable Outboard Bracket

Yesterday I bought an adjustable O/B motor mount, but when I put it up to the transom, I realized that, because of the angle of the transom, the motor will lean forward. I can adjust the O/B lower unit out, but that's the wrong direction. I'm guessing that I have to shim (significantly) the bracket where it attaches to the transom. Any suggestions on how to shim, or solve this another way. For the moment, I'm in a holding pattern. Thanks. Brian

is the bracket a garelick?

if it is, you should be able to turn the mounting plate of the bracket upside down to counter the angle of the transom. the mounting plate on the bracket is easily removable. i installed one this spring on my 23. the directions from garelick have a section that describes the process in detail.

Not a Garelick.

No. I can't remember the brand off the top of my head. On this model, though, the mounting bracket and motor bracket are parallel, so I don't know is flipping it would help, but I'll look. Thanks. Brian

Check this month's isse of SAIL

This very problem was addressed in the "Things That Work" column on the last page of the magazine. I remember it well because I own an H23 too. Good luck. Peter S/V Raven

SAIL Magazine article details?

Peter, Could you post an overview of what SAIL had to say? I'm interested, as I'd like to change the O/B mount on my H23... --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' H25 'Adagio'

No website

I looked, but it appears that SAIL does not have a website. As for the bracket, I bought a Foulton at West Marine, but you have to buy an extra piece if your transom is not vertical. So I'm taking it back. Boat/US carries the Garelick's, which are adjustable to various transom angles.

Response to Jon B re: motor mounts

Jon: I tried to describe this fix, but it's one of those situations where a picture is definitely worth a thousand words. I will try to scan the drawing in the next few days and e-mail it to you. Alternatively, you can go down to your local Barnes & Noble and buy the magazine. If I wasn't such an honest guy, I would suggest that you sneak a peek at the magazine stand. But since I am, I really can't suggest that you just sneak a peek, if you catch my drift. It's a simple fix. Peter
