Adjustable Motor mount

Have a 5hp Honda 4-stroke. Thinking about the Garlick Non-offshore model that can be adjusted to the angle of the transom. When the motor mount is attached to the transom, does there need to be something between the gelcoat and the motor mount (other than 4200 adhesive)? Do the mounts come with a gasket or something? I am planning on purchasing a mount soon. Already have a backing block (marine plywood) and will fill in any uneeded holes with epoxy, as per suggestion by Peter S (I think). Hopefully there is no water in the transom wood as the seal around the old mount appears to be in good shape. Checking on the boat this weekend. Anything else I should look for? sv Winter Solace

Garlick Motor Mount

I am using the same Garlick model for a 9.9hp Johnson. To keep the up-down release handle away from the rubbing strake, I used a single 3/4 inch thickness of white polymer construction board to offset. I used black polysulfide sealant instead of 4200/5200 because of vibration concerns. Polysulfide sealant is more flexible in such applications. - Kevin.

Beware of heavy-duty springs!

I put a Garelick offshore version (71091?) on my H25 because I was purchasing a 100+ pound Honda 9.9 extra long shaft. While I was waiting for the new engine to arrive, I used my 62 lb Honda 5 hp 20" shaft. The springs on the offshore model are so strong that I actually had to stand on the motor mount to lower the engine all the way. The 9.9 still requires a strong shove to get it all the way down. Don't know how strong the springs are on the non-offshore model, but the offshore would be overkill for you. I used 1/2" Starboard to space my mount away from the transom.

Pull a couple of springs...

I retrofitted a Garelick to my H23 last Spring. The springs were designed to handle a much larger engine than my 5hp two-stroke. It was impossible for my wife to lower without standing on it. I pulled out a few of the springs. Carefully! They are springs after all. It moves easily in either direction now. I love it. Oh: 3/4" teak pad on the outside & 1/2" white marine board on the inside to stiffen up the transom. The transom isn't very think and if you don't back the mount you could develop some hairline cracks. While you are in there take out the bolts for the lower pintle and look hard. If she is going to leak/rot anywhere that is the most likely place on an H23. If necessary: Repair any damage and use a backing board there too.
