Adjustable Jib Sheet Blocks?

I have an '88 H285. Sails great, but am looking at changing the jib sheet blocks, adding a couple of cheekblocks at the forward end of the track and running a line aft to be able to move the blocks up/down the track from the helm. Has anyone done this? I've seen it on racing boats, and it seems to work, especially effective when changing tack. Any ideas?

Liberty Cup Boats Had This Setup

This is an excellent idea for anyone who likes better control of the sails. The 35.5s that were used in the Liberty Cup were outfitted with Genoa car controls like you mentioned. That's a good project. Recommend epoxy sealing any holes drilled into the deck to keep water out of the core.

Genny Cars

I recently looked into a set of adjustable cars for my HL35. Garhauer Marine has a neat set. Ball bearings on the traveler car etc. The set inclues the head block with pulleys, the traveling genny car with pulleys and the foot block wth the jam cleat. John Nantz, can you tell us more about the Liberty Cup 35.5 race boats ?? Rigging, keel design and the other particulars ?? R Dean

Liberty Cup 35.5 Race Boats

Dean - It's been a long time but in the early 90s there was a group of matched 35.5s that were used in the Liberty Cup. Les Blackwell in the Northwest owned one for several years (now has a 380) and would know a lot about them. He raced his and did very well. They were set up with spinnakers and, if I remember right, had a track screwed on the front of the mast for the pole. They had back stay adjusters and a jack stay (triangle setup where the forestay meets the mast. For anyone racing a fractional rig this is a good thing to have because it helps keep the mast straight. They also had adjustments for the genoa cars with, I think, cheek blocks at each end of the track. They all had fin keels. Don't remember anything off hand about any other particulars. Cosmetically they had, I think, red, white, and blue shear stripes. Maybe all red? Can't remember. R Dean

Go with Garhaur,

Their ball bearing blocks are the best rated by Practical Sailor, cheaper than Harkens non-ball bearing slider blocks, and come with all the required multi purchase turning blocks, forward & on the car. Makes all the difference in the world to get exact trim while under load with minimum exertion on your part. Use em on my H34 when racing with the 155, or cruising with the roller furler. BOL PJ

Fine Tuning

PJ, Could you elaborate on the technique used to fine tune the headsail with the Garhauer adjustable jib car ?? When moving to the jib car adjusting line what would you be looking at and what changes would you expect to see (feel etc) as you fine tune the location of the adjustable jib car ?? Was this strictly a matter of getting the teltales to flow ??? Appreciate your guidance in this matter. R Dean
