This season I finally upgraded to the adjustable genoa cars we were discussing on this list during the winter. This was an incredibly simple upgrade to install, and the benefits have been tremendous. After 2 weeks I am already a much better genoa trimmer than I have ever been, and the boatspeed at different points of sail demonstrates the improvement. This is probably the best performance upgrade I've made to the boat, on a par with the Garhauer flat traveler. Thanks for everyone's input.

Bob: Yup, the ability to move the fairlead cars sure makes a big differnce in boat performance. You would be amazed at the number of boats I have been on where it is obvious that the fairlead cars have never been moved. One C30 sailor on my dock in Long Beach actually put set screw on each car so the cars, which were all beat up and slipping, would stay in place!!!! I tried to explain the importance of being able to move the cars but he wasn't interested. You can only go so far with some people and the problem is "a man doesn't know what he doesn't know". Then one day he told me he was interested in getting into racing. I suggested he save his race fee wmoney.

Do you think there's hope? ;D I find it so strange. When I go sailing I'm always looking at trim and trying to get the boat to do the best I can. I just can't figure those guys that put up sails and just forget about trimming. 'Set it and forget it' is just not my cup of tea.

Alan: Nope, I think it is what it is. With my books, charts and seminar experience over the years I think it breaks out something like this. 25% of the sailors worldwide are in the expert catagory and know what they are doing. The bottom 25% want to learn all there is to know about how to make their boats perform - most of the folks that visit this forum and buy my material are in this group and they can be composed of sailors of all levels from beginner to high intermediate. The middle group from 25% to 75%, for the most part, just want to "raise the main and roll out the jib" and call it sailing, which it is (if I could find a way to break into that group I'd be a rich man). The boat moves through the water and they have a fun time, which I guess is what it is all about - they would have a better time and their boat and sails would love them if they spent the small amount of time it takes to get it right. Inside of 4 hours, there is not one beginner sailor in the world that I could not teach sail trim to and move them from beginner to high intermediate in that space of time. Sail trim is very easy to learn when presented in a logical and step by step process and according to testimonials I receive I have it down pat - it isn't just me, anyone could if they took the time. Everytime I bring up this subject some folks in the middle group get offended and they accuse me of being a perfectionist, which I am, or other such things. I'm also self centered. In other words, I don't really care how they sail their boats. I only care about how I sail my boat. Here in Tucson I play golf, tennis and even shoot baskets with a lot of folks in the middle catagory (25% to 75%). They call it "hit and giggle" tennis or golf. It just frustrates me as I want to return every tennis ball, hit each golf ball down the middle of the course and win every game of horse. I don't like to play with the experts because of betting (I may as well give them the money at the very beginning of the round and be done with it) and I am not at their level. I've found a group of guys and gals in the 25% range and am really enjoying myself. The key for me with anything I do is to always get better. I'm even off this morning to a welding class!!! I want to make some trellis's and wall/yard art but at my present welding level they would not look very nice.
