Ihave three inquiries about my 192. 1. My spec sheet shows "Weight 1400lbs. (Displacement) Ballast 400 lbs.(Fixed Internal Lead)" Is the ballast included in the Weight(Displacement) or should I consider it as an addition to Displacement? 2. I'm looking for info. on adding a bow-sprit and asymetrical spinaker. 3. I'm also curious about adding a small mizzenmast & mizzen. This season I replaced my original equipment Jib Furler with a new CDI Furler. What a difference!!! Lke day and night! Now I have to find something else to complain about,.

Displacement is displacement, all bareboat weight included except holding tank contents and motor. As for splitting the rig and adding a mizzen, you will likely unbalance your boat, giving it a more than healthy weather helm and make it difficult to manage and control. You can probably add the asym, without a bowsprit as you will be moving your centre of effort too far forward and acquire too much lee helm with a sprit. Of course, if you add the mizzen, you MAY balance this out against the bowsprit, but with three sheets to the wind your boat will be overpowered, and will be sailing on its ear the whole time, perhaps even inviting capsize. If you can do the math, it is possible to calculate the location of the centre of effort for each sail, (bisect each side or angle; where the lines intersect is the CE for that sail), with the percentage of area of each sail against the whole sail plan, then recalculate your new combined center of effort against you centre of lateral resistance. (Usually the CLR is the middle of the keel. If your combined CE is slightly behind the CLR you will have a bit of weather helm (a good thing). If your new configuration puts the CE ahead of the CLR, you need to go back to the drawing board, because you will be sailing a dangerous lee helm ship that WANTS to go out of control, and will fight you at all times. A balanced boat with slight weather helm is a joy to sail, and will take care of you when you loose control.
