Yikes...I have to install an inspection port

in the holding tank? Won't that introduce another potential source of holding tank leaks? Have you done this and found the ports not to leak (even when under pressure) Which one is better the WM inspection ports or the Ronco. The reason I am *Very* concerned is because I have inspection ports on my Ronco water tanks and they leak all the time I overfill the water tanks. The leak occur where the threads to the port screw in. I (and others) have tried to do numerous things to prevent the ports from leaking but nothing seems to help. If I have to put an inspection port in the holding tank I think I will skip trying to do this.

Easily fixed

Remove the screws...wrap a little teflon tape around 'em...put 'em back. I suspect that the rubber gasket that should be under the "ring" is missing (although Ronco usually--at least they used to) spinwelds the port in insead of screwing it down). If so, put one down before you put the screws back in. There should also be a rubber o-ring above the threads on the cap...if not, get one. To answer your question, I couldn't find any inspection ports in the WM catalog...and the ones Ronco sells are the same Beckson ports they used to carry. And btw...yours is the first leaky port in a Ronco tank that I've ever heard about. They were both made at the same time, so my guess is, the same person installed both..obviously someone who wasn't as well trained to do it as he should have been. If you'd complained to 'em immediately after it happened the first time they'd have fixed 'em for you under warranty--including round trip shipping.

I wish that was true

Peggy LOTS of Catalina fresh water tanks are leaking, all you need to do is monitor the Sailnet Catalina or C36 list (If you do a search of the archives you'd find alot). Many, many people have tried all sorts of fixes with the teflon tape being one of the first. Nobody has found any easy solution. The easy solution is to not overfill the water tanks But in all due respect to Ronco, Catalina might have been the ones doing the installation and not Ronco. I'll have to take some pics, because the leaks have to do with the screwed in inspection ports and not the piece that is welded into the tank. (There are no actual screws)

That can only mean one thing...

The 3" round rubber o-ring that should be on the threaded cap at the top of the threads against the lid, is missing. The only other possible explanation is a whole batch of out-of-round inspection ports...which I doubt. Unscrew the cap, take a look, and let me know what you find.

Further on bow holding tank size

I checked with my dealer who checked with Gerry Douglas at Catalina regarding the holding tank size ie. 24 vs 34 gallons. The tank size is now 24 gallons and it is the only one which will fit. Apparently the current tank for the Catalina 36 MKII fits on a fibreglas saddle molded to fit the tank. On the MK1 models the tank sits on a glassed in shelf further forward than the MKII tank. Apparently they made the tank smaller to overcome a tendency for the MKI to sit with the bow a bit lower than intended and to change back is not reasonably possible - at least with the current design. I hope that perhaps some seeds have been planted and perhaps a larger tank may be possible in the future either in the bow or as Tom S. suggests on the port side.

Wow!

I guess the resale value of my MKI just went up again! I've got a 34 gal bow water tank, a 33 gal fuel tank, AND a real nav station! :)
