Any OB tech types out there? has anyone ever added a recoil starter to an electric start outboard that was not so equipped from the factory? motor has an emergency start option that has you remove the top cowl, then 2 screws and 3 bolts to remove plastic flywheel cover, then wrap a rope on outer edge of flywheel to pull start - just seems not practical to me in a emergency situation so am hoping to add the recoil unit to flywheel and have the rope at the ready - I see the plastic flywheel cover and the motor cowl have exit route for rope and I tracked down the recoil assembly listed for this motor - just do not know if or how it may be mounted on existing flywheel. 2002 9.9 merc thanks for any comments

If you don't .........

If you don't get help at this site try "marineengine.com". There would seemed to be a lot of mechanics that watch that site. good luck, Jack

Try talking to the mechanics at your Mer place

They might well know. Most electric starts that I have had contact with have the starter mounted vertically below the flywheel, engaging a ring gear around the circumference. A manual start should be able to be mounted using the OEM hardware. My 9.9 Evinrude has both. Good luck and keep us posted as this might be of interest to many.

You first , Charlie, I'm right behind you

probably some fisherman still at it. Higher risk with water temps (39 toledo,46 cleve) and our channel is probably half shoaled in by now. Maybe we'll all get out there early this spring. 'Catch' you out there.
