I want to add a tach/hourmeter to my O'Day 28. I have not been able to find this in any of the catalogs I read. These units are offered for gas engines with rpm up to 6000 or so, but nothing up to 4000, or less, for a diesel. How is this hooked up? Does it get wired into the alternator or do the sending units measure in some other way? As part of this same project, I want to move the instrument panel, which is now located at ankle level, up to seat level. I would like to fill the old panel hole with a coaming box, either with or without cover. I have been able to locate these in only a few sizes, none of which would work in the flat space around the old panel. Any sorces or ideas? Thanks, Wayne

Try this link for the coaming boxes

On my 32 ODay I installed a new alternator with ac taps for the Tach then I found a new tach with universial settings for any application. I found the tach at Torrensen marine,it was a replacement for the OEM that came with my Westerbeke 30

Try Teleflex

I agree that I haven't seen any combo tach hour meters in WM catalogs, but they should be available. Most in diesles go up to 6000 rpm, although we never get there anyway. The range of the atch isn't that important. They feed off the alternator. If the pre-made coaming boxes aren't your size, you'll just have to make your own, or as suggested, find a custom shop.

Engine Hour Meter

Wayne, For an engine hour meter, try Faria. Check faria.com. I bought a replacement from them for my 15 year old one that died. I think it was about $45. or so. It is an easy install and picks up power from the output side of the ignition switch. As long as it has power it runs, when you stop the engine, it stops.

I wanted to get a TinyTach

but they told me they have problems with the Universal M25 - perhaps other Universals too, as the pulse on the injection lines isn't strong enough. Anyone using one with an M25 successfully???

Tachometer

I added a tach to my previous boat but it did not have an hour meter. I bought one of the Teleflex alternator driven tachometers from WM. Teleflex makes a Lido model for diesel engines. I took my alternator to a local automotive alternator/starter shop and they added the wire required to drive the tach. It all worked well once I calbrated the tach to my setup. CruzPro makes a digital Tach with hour meter but I'm not sure what you would need to do to get a signal from the engine or alternator (see link).
