Hi All,

I hope your day is going well.
I need a sanity check.

I have the companionway step below I took out.
It had some insulation for sound in the back, it was torn and falling apart.
I removed it completely by scraping and hand gun, then used my wood plane to shave it to raw wood.

So I have raw wood.
I wanted to attach sound proofing as my engine is a noisy but cool MD2B 1974,
I got Soundown Sound-Stop Foam Panel with 1lb Barrier Layer Foam 1.5".
I thought for some reason it had a tape which you remove and glue but it does not.

So
1. I need to buy either glue or double sided tape. What do you recommend ?
2. I need to buy Pin Fasteners, attach them to the wood using glue epoxy.
3. I put the glue on. Any glue brand you recommend ?
4. I apply the Foam panel.
5. I put the washer and domed cap on the pin fasteners.
6. It says to put side adhesive , so I assume you do this before you apply the material ?

Anything I am missing ?
or any better idea?

I used Scotch Super 77spray adhesive when I needed more than what came with the installation kit.
I epoxied the pin fasteners to the wood. Screws would also be good if you could get them to fit.
Adding foil/mylar tape to finish any seams and the exposed edges really helps keep them from fraying and deteriorating.

Thanks, I was going back and forth in though between the screws and the epoxy since as you mention they would not have much to bite on.

Hi All,

Finished it.
The material is
Soundown Sound-Stop Foam Panel with 1lb Barrier Layer . This was 1.5 inches
It is a big piece so $130. I used maybe 1/8 of it for this.

I also needed to buy
Soundown 28/AC-AL Noise Reduction Installation Kit - NACAL
This is the pins, washers, caps, tape, glue.

The foam can be cut using a packing knife and a Japanese chef knife.
I read the recommendation is turkey electric knife.
If you cut using the shiny stuff as a guide, it has a grid on it, which makes your life easier.

I pretaped the sides with the tape before installing. I researched and it said the glue can hold on to the tape.

I mounted the pins using Epoxy as I had it around and the holes are very tiny so I don't know any screws that would do well there.
They moved a lot so I should have added Silica to the epoxy to make it less "runny".
I made the piece stand on them so the pressure of weight would make them stick solid.
They are super stuck once the epoxy is set.
They are fragile though so always try to adjust them so they are 90 degrees if not you can bend them.
{If you look final bottom right, I bent one}.

When gluing, I would painter's tape the sides you don't want glue on, in my case it was where the catch is for the step lock
and the sides.
The special glue comes out like a spiderman's web and is super sticky mess, so you don't want it on the sides.

I tried pre-staging the pieces by making holes but because of the pin height and you can't see the holes as they are on the other side
it is hard to replace them in the same place as the holes, so I ended up with double the holes.
I'd probably have to use a wood slat on the wood and mark it to know where to put it back.
Next time.

Once you pushed it down.
You can add the washers.
In my case the pins are "too long", so I snipped them with a plier.
Leave 1/8" of an inch.
To apply the caps, I'd rotated and not push down. {Final bottom right, I pushed down and bent it}.
Just keep rotating it while gently pushing down.

Good luck.
