I've got a bit of time on my hands and thought to DIY install some volume behind the luff of my 135% Genoa so it will perform (and look) better when not fully unwound (i.e. reefed) from the roller furler.
For this purpose, I've heard and read that sewing in a bundle of relatively light polypropelene rope is an alternative over foam rubber. Rope is attractive to me because I have some already at hand.
The number of ropes in the bundle is such so there are more along the middle of the luff length (thus imparting more volume there as the sail is furled) than in the regions closer to the tack and the head. For example maybe 3 ropes thickness added in the center of the luff length then 2 ropes, then 1, then 0 as the bundle progresses up and down.
Does anyone have info, or know where to get it, on how to determine the amount of volume needed, desired volume taper, and its location along the luff?
Thanks in advance for responses.
regards,
Rardi
