I want to add a rope clutch to my 340 for a spinnaker halyard. Presently, I have a triple clutch to starboard and a double to port. My intention is to add a single clutch to the port side. Has anyone else added a clutch to their 340, and if so did you add it to the port or starboard side of the existing port-side double clutch? Thanks for any help and advice.

Clutch removal

Hi Mike, My clutches (1985 h40) are glued down as well as screwed in. If you want to replace yours, I have used a debonding agent that worked like a dream. A couple of squirts from the aerosol can and the glue turns to goo. It cost about $20. I'll look up the brand if you think you might use it. Have any relatives in NY or New England?

I added one to my H310

I added a rope clutch to the port side of my H310. I bought a matching rope clutch from Westmarine. There is a alum. plate glassed in the cabin roof and you will need to drill and tapp the holes (#10-32). I used a marine silcone caulk to glue the clutch down as 3M 5200 can melt the casing of the clutch (Read mounting instructions)I also added a foot block at the mast step to route the spinnaker halyard to the new rope clutch. Job took about a 1/2 hr. Steve, s/v The Odyssey (H310)

Steve, need more info

Steve: Did you have an exisitng double clutch on the port side, and if so, on which side of this double clutch did you install the new single clutch? Gene: As far back as my records go, all of my family hails from Iowa and Nebraska--nono on the east coast.

a rope clutch is

a device that allows a line to be pulled through it but will not allow the line slacken until the lever is released. They are usually used in conjunction with a winch for things like a halyard and sheets. This allows the line to stay taunt without the use of a cleat. There are several mfg of these devices from Spinlock, Garhauer, Harken etc. If you look in the West Marine, Boat US catalogs there will be pictures of them. I am sure that you will recognize them once you see one.

I have a dbl clutch on the port side and I added a single matching clutch on the outside right next to the dbl. It now looks just like the triple on the starboard side. When you drill the 2 holes out, you only get one shot at this or the clutches will not line up with one another and it will look like you did a bad job at mounting the clutch. What I did to mark the holes was to take a mech. pencil, make the lead come out real far whereas it will reach inside the clutch to the mounting holes. Draw around the holes, remove the clutch, drill, tap, apply cauk to clutch, fasten clutch, clean off extra caulk, route your line, grab a beer, sit back and look at what a wounderful job you just did and drink you beer and smile. Life is good!!! Let me know if you need any other help. Steve, s/v The Odyssey (H310)

Thanks, Steve Cook

I followed your suggestions to the letter and now have a "perfectly" installed rope clutch. Thanks for the help.

Did the beer help?

Glad I could help. I also added a bulls eye fairlead w/cam cleat on the starboard side for the main sheet as the rope clutch for that had to go. If you wanna know how I did that just let me know. Some other guy from HOW with a H310 did what I did and he says it works great for him. Steve, The Odyssey (H310)

If you can't drill and tap..

You can always drill through the liners and through bolt the clutch. If you need to do this you may consider drilling the hole larger and filling the area with epoxy and then redrilling to prevent water from getting into the area in the future.
