Adding Oil to a 10-2 Westerbeke

My 10-2 indicated I was down about a quart of oil. I added 1/3 of a quart of oil (that all I had at the time) to my 10-2 Westerbeke. I then tried to start it. The engine started (right away) It then smoked and stalled. I waited 10 minutes or so, then re-sarted it and it seemed fine. Is this a normal event and has anyone else has this happen.

Maybe, when adding oil I should wait several hours to be sure all the oil passing before trying to start the engine.

I've never had that problem with my 10-2. Are you sure that you followed the normal starting proceedure? I don't think you held the glow plug push button in long enough. I use a minimum of 15 seconds.

You might be overfilling the oil ... The dipstick om my Westerbeke (on my first boat)would show it was a qt. low when I first removed it, but when I replaced and removed the dipstick a second time it would indicate full. Further re-checks would also indicate no oil was needed. FWIW, I have also seen this happen on another Wseterbeke.

If you overfilled your oil as suggested by Duke, I would suggest that you drain all oil out of the engine. At the same time change the filter. I use a "Handy Pump". Buy rubber gloves from Ace Hardware - with talc.

I don't think the stall was due to oil level. The start procedure for that boat/engine is to:
1) turn the key
2) Hold glow plug button 10-15 seconds
3) Press start while holding glow plug button.

If the engine is cold you might have to put the engine transmission in neutral ( pull out black knob on throttle). and repeat the steps above. If idle is low and leads to stall of engine give it some throttle with gear in neutral. Then feather the throttle to neutral position and push in Neutral knob.

You don't need to hold the glow plug in while pushing the start button. Why? Because the glow plugs have already warmed the chambers. Using both at the same time draws down the battery power unnecessarily. And results in, uhm, hard starting.

Good ideas in the rest.

Doesn't the manual say to pull dipstick, clean, reinsert and pull again. Oh - wuat I was thining about was transmission 'dipstick' that you needed to screw back in to check level (after unscrewing and cleaning). Just unscrewing, cleaning and pushing it back down would always show trans low. Had to screw it in to get full depth on stick...

In regards to Stu's comment about not holding the preheat while pressing the start button, that might depend on the panel your boat has. I have the Admiral panel and it states on page 7 & 9 that the start button will not start the engine electronincally if the preheat button is not depressed.
