My main project (dollar wise) this year has to be adding jib furling on my H26. Can anyone give me advice on whether I should spend the extra bucks on a new furling jib? Has anyone had their OEM jib successfully re-cut to be a furler? Thanks & Merry Christmas, Jim Covey s/v Wampeter

New Furler

I just ordered a Schaefer SnapFurl Headsail Furler from Sailnet. It is on sale at $328.00 till the end of the month. My local loft will modify the Jib for about $350.00 this includes the UV strip. This furler was rated a best buy by Practical Sailor April 15 2000. Good luck and Merry Christmas Dan s/v "Unruly Julie"

CDI

I have a CDI furling system on my H26 and it seems to work great. The warrentee on it is impecciable, basically if you break anything for any reason it is covered with no questions. I broke the plastic luff last year and dented the stainless steel furling drum and they replaced it with no questions. I also had my jib recut and navy sunbrella put on the leeward edge. OEM - OK

David is on track.. we run a CDI on our 26 with out a problem... from self installed to the oem headsail conversion. If you sail in light air a lot, you may want to forgo the sunbrella UV protector for lighter material suggested by the sailloft. The sunbrella is heavy and will tend to hold the sail out of shape in very light air. other then that.. go with the CDI and a OEM conversion. (keep the hanks for fishing weights!) Steve

SnapFurl 500-L on a >25' boat?

Dan, thanks for the heads up on that great sale of the Schaefer 500-L SnapFurl furlers. I just called Schaefer and talked to Dave Anderson and he indicated to me that the 500-L may or may not work on my 25.5. Did you get any idea from Schaefer if the 500-L would work fine on a Hunter 26? Does anyone else out there have a Schaefer 500-L installed on a 25' boat or larger? Any problems? If this furler will work for my boat then I think I will get it. $350 is an amazing price! Also Jim, I have a CDI furler and I can't stand it. Granted it is an older 1885 vintage model but the biggest problem I have with CDI designs is that they do not give you a good way to adjust your headsail halyard tension from the cockpit. They do not have and don't plan to ever use a halyard swivel which is a blessing and a curse. For simple cruising the non-swivel is probably more reliable, no halyard wraps etc. But if you are all interested in getting more performance out of your headsail you really need a way to easily adjust the halyard tension. Also during my conversations with CDI I wasn't too impressed with their technical support. They do not even have drawings of the model furler that I have, but then again Hunter doesn't have drawings of my boat either :(. Schaefer and Harken's technical support were a dream compared to CDI.

CDI Works Fine

I too added a CDI furler which can be purchased via discount websites - I bought mine from Defenderus. Recut jib and add UV material at sailmaker, cut the headstay to fit the CDI furler, and you can easily self-install the system. You will need to buy two chainplates to get the furler drum off the deck, so talk to CDI about it first and they can supply them. It's a simple system and it is relatively easy to trailer with it. You will like the convenience of the furling jib a lot.

Furler

Anthony/Jim Schaefer makes the 500, which is for boats up to 24'. I called Schaefer, and told them my boat is a 26, but the forestay is only 29'11''. They said with the 100% headsail and short forestay, the 500 would work fine. It's length is 31', and the 500L is 35'. Dan

You need to order a CDI II

It is made to fit the H 26. Mine works very well. The CDI works well cuz it has an internal halyard, which leaves you your old jib halyard to use to set a spinnaker. I don't think leach tension is a real big problem. I've had a CDI on two othe boats and have been trouble free and would never own a boat without a furler. Good luck.
