Not a problem.

My old 2QM20 has gauges so it should present no problem for a later 2GM. A previous owner installed a Stewart Warner panel that included tach, water temp, oil pressure, and an on/off switch with key. Has a pushbutton for start and is lit. Running the wires to the correct location might be the toughest part.

Gauges are a must but,

You should also keep the lights and warning alarm as a backup. While motoring you will not be watching the gauges constantly, whereas you will know there is a problem when the alarm goes off. I installed gauges on my Yanmar 3GMD, but kept the alarm as well. Main problem is providing a place to install the sender for the temperature gauge. Ended up drilling and tapping the water jacket for the new sender. Just using a T on the alarm sender doesn't work well because you can get air trapped in the sender and it will not register the correct temp. Good luck.
