I am planning to do some extended crusiing and would like to add additional fuel capacity i.e an extra tank or tanks sowhere below deck. I have considered modiying or replacting the 40 gallon rear water tank but then I would have limited water capacity. Has any one added an extra tank to a 361?

extra tankage

Nic - I have a 400 that I've wanted to add tankage to. I'm thinking two saddle tanks in the upper part of both cockpit lockers, in the wasted space inside the cockpit coaming. I think the tank could be constructed of plywood with fiberglass/resin on the inside, with a similar lid fastened down onto a gasketed aluminum flange mounted inside the tanks, gravity-fed into the main tank, but so far, I haven't built anything. When I cruised Mexico a few years ago, I used a 27 gal. bladder tank lashed on the deck forward of the traveler with a valved hose that I gravity-fed to the main tank, and four 5-gallon jerry cans in the starboard cockpit locker that I siphoned into the main tank with a bulbed hose. It gave me about 80 gals total, enough to cover the distance from Cabo San Lucas to Turtle Bay, on the Baja peninsula. It was a little cumbersome, but it worked.

Watermaker

I am in the process of converting my aft water tank to a fuel tank and adding a watermaker. It solves two problems at the same time. Jim

Follow up

Thanks Jim, I look forward to hearing of your progress. What size watermaker did you get. Where are you putting it. I was wondering whether there was enough room forward of the front water tank. If not I am sure one of the under seatee lockers would be adequate. I see you have a 393 which is very similar in configuration but larger than the 361. Nic

More investigation

is necessary into the maker of the chosen watermaker but I am leaning toward an engine driven pump. A couple of hours on the engine will make ~80 gallons of water. The placement of the equipment will probably be in place of the forward holding tank since we rarely use that head. By the end of this season, I will have all the information and measuring done and will begin installation. Jim
