I need some ideas on how to run wires from the pedestal guard for radar, GPS, autohelm and anemometer. This would be a simple job, but there is no easy access to the pedestal guard. Thanks, Jennie

You have two options. You can drill a hole in the guard and fish them down or you can run them down the pedestal itself. I used the pedestal because the two cables for the radar are too large for the guard. Just pull off the compass, assuming you have one atop the pedestal and you will be able to look down in the shaft. You probably have a cover over the steering cables in the quarter berth that will come down to allow you to see the pedestal base and give you a line of sight to the top. A heavy fishing line, with a washer attached, can be dropped from the top to fish the cables through the pedestal. Good luck.

How do you use the boat?

The helm may or may not be the best place for all those instriments. What I found is that stuff that others might have to look at or that you might want to see while the autopilot is conning the boat are better put under the dogger(wind instriments, speed, depth). That way you don't have to go back to the helm to see if you are shoaling or if your sail trim is working better etc. If you are considering blue water sailing then the best place for radar and GPS is at the nav station as this enables you to do the navigation from there instead of having to get up on deck when the weather turns sour. You can then just stick your head up in the dogger and check the instriments when you do the checks for traffic. It is also IMHO a real pain to mount and unmount the equipment everytime you want to sail. I never felt at ease leaving the gear mounted when I left the boat and didn't want to have it out in the weather all the time if I went for the "pod" mount.

Jennie, I ran mine up the pedestal on...

our H28. Just make sure you run the wires between the outside of the cylindrical sleeve at the base of the pedestal and the pedestal housing to keep them away from the steering system cables. Also, secure them at the top of the pedestal and away from the steering system. Terry
