I have a question, I want to add drainage holes in the cockpit storage lockers. Has anyone done this? Anything that I should be concerned with in doing this?

I share your interest

James I can't believe you haven't generated any responces to your locker drainage question. I too have been bewildered as to why Hunter has not engineered drainage into the lockers. i keep a large sponage in my lockers to keep them dry. Is there anybody out there??? regards dan

Just noticed your post

Yes I would be very keen to put drainage in the lockers of my 260.

simple

two thru hulls and hose with clamps. You can cut a hole in the bottom of the locker and drain it out via hose to another thru hull on the side of the boat. I have seen it done going thru the wall into the cockpit but you will have some standing water in the locker if you go that route. Make sure you caulk the thru hulls with 5200 marine sealant and suggest that the area where they sit be sanded some for good adhesion.

I Started To Also, Just like Crazy Dave Said

Identical to the way the anchor well is set up, but that would have created another way for water to drain into the boat. The other concern is that is where the gas tank is stored and that would be even worse. I opted for the car wash sponge in each locker.

Cockpit locker drainage holes

James, adding drains to your cockpit lockers should be fairly simple. Find the lowest point of the locker, where a small amount of water might pool. This will probably be in the aft, inboard corner of the locker. Drill a suitable sized hole through the cockpit vertical bulkhead into the locker. Connect the holes in the locker and the cockpit with a short length of pvc matching the hole size and seal the joints with 5200. This is very similar to what Hunter engineered for the anchor locker. I have encountered water collecting in the lockers only when I wash the cockpit or if I leave the covers open during a rain shower. Rather than violating the integrity of the cockpit by drilling holes, I'll just keep a sponge handy in the starboard locker. Dock lines and fenders go in the port locker. Fair winds, Steve Kamp

curious about the need

i just wanted to express my curiosity as to why water collects in the lockers to start with. i understand that in a driving rain, the water is only intended to be diverted by the overlap of the locker cover and the lip around the top of the locker. rainwater routinely collects in our starboard locker, but never to port: wierd. i can't attribute it to prevailing winds or weather patterns, so it must be that the alignment of the starboard cover isn't as good, and therefore there is not as much overlap. i've studied it but can't discern any misalignment. with the port side always dry, i would rather try to realign via the starboard hinges than start drilling holes. any ideas from the group? - thanks, ed
