Adding deck hardware at mast

I have an '88 Mark II, and would like to add 3-4 blocks at the base of the mast to bring some lines aft to the cockpit. (Except for a single bail facing aft attached to the bottom of the mast, there's no place to fix any hardware). What is under the deck at this point? It looks like the mast is stepped on a very solid "arch" from beam to beam, supported in part by the wooden compression post. Can I drill through it? Or is it metal, which means I would have to drill and tap at the deck? Any other solutions? Thanks in advance! Bruce

The support frame/arch has a wood core. You can drill into it ... no problem. Once water gets into it it will rot and go soft ... big problem. The best way to do what you want is to pop the mast out and put a SS plate under the mast step. Re-bed the mast step bolts and re-step the mast. The plates are $46.95 from Catalina Direct
