Adding blocks and line clutches to cabin top

This spring we're going to add Harken single-line reefing to our '96 H26. I don't have the instructions handy, but I know we have to add a block (or two) to the cabin top. We'll also need to add another rope clutch. What is involved in installing new hardware to the cabin top of the H26? I assume you can get to the backing plate of the existing clutches via the access panel under the winch. But how do you install backing plates for hardware at other locations on the cabin top where there are no existing access panels? Must these be visible in the boat's interior? Probably dumb questions, but I'm trying to figure out how much pain we're in for. If anyone has already installed the Harken system on their boat, I would appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks.

raised areas

I believe that the raised areas under the rope clutch and deck organizer have aluminum backing plates embedded in the deck. These can be drilled and tapped for new hardware. Same story for the corresponding areas portside. You can confirm this by observing the shavings while drilling a small hole.

Hardware

I think the only hardware you have to drill and tap is for the rope clutch. If I remember the H26 already has a single rope clutch. There should be room beside that to mount a secon. The smooth flat areas on the deck with no nonskid are where the backing plates are. As far as the blocks go they are mounted on the stantions and bow pulpit to route the furling line aft. Mine doen't use a rope clutch, but simply a horn cleat mounted on the rail. Hope this helps. Furling is great. I almost didn't purchase it but was talked into it by dealer and WIFE. I hate it when she's right.

Mounting deck hardware

If your '96 is like my '97, then the routing of lines for the mainsail reefing will have to be down the port side. The starboard side is already full with main and jib halyards plus the centerboard control line. The two items you need that will attach to the deck are a line organizer and rope clutch. Both are located in areas where there are metal mounting plates embedded in the deck. You'll have to drill and tap them so the mounting bolts can threaded into them. I don't believe you'll actually need to access the areas from underneath since you won't be using nuts. Please note that I haven't actually done any of this yet, but am planning to before the next season. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy
