Adding Batteries

I have a 1997 Hunter 376 which came with 2-6 volt deep cycle batteries. The batteries are located under the settee along with a charger/inverter. There is no more room for additional batteries and I would like to add more.
Has anyone had this experience and where would be the best location for them. The only location I can think of is in the aft sail locker and I really don't want to use that space for batteries also they would be a long way from the other batteries.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks AndyL for this information, it appears that I will have to add the batteries to the sail lockers and run very long cables.

Thanks jssailem, I have the water heater, accumulator, refrigerator and air conditioning located there with no room to spare. Pretty much all areas are filled.

Replace the existing with higher amp-hour battery capacity. That is what did on my boat.

You are in the best position to determine where you would have room. As a general suggestion I would try to locate them in the opposite side of the boat for weight balance. Also measure the wiring round trip distance to the 1st Battery Bank so you can properly size the wiring to connect them. Needless to say, make it a location with easy access for maintenance.

Ed,
Try a search on “H376 battery” . There are some good ideas there. Also Search “2cd battery bank in H376” and “2nd battery bank”. Some discuss putting more in the port settee, but they’re not discussing 6V’s. One discusses putting the second set in the trash can area.

I’ve contemplated adding more batteries, but haven’t made a decision yet. Currently we have two 6V’s plus the 12V starter battery in the port settee locker. I added 320W flex solar panels to the Bimini and can usually eke out 3 days on anchor before running the main alternator for additional charge. We’re usually moving somewhere else by then, so if there isn’t enough sun, we do a little motor sailing to to up.

I‘ll be interested to hear what you decide.

Hope this helps.

If you are installing lead/acid batteries, I would not store sails near them.
